4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive Appearance At Budget Price 19 Oct 2009
By Alan VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The Packard Bell EasyNote TJ65 is a smart and attractive entry-level laptop, offering generous specifications at a budget price tag. If you've looked at some of the 15.6-inch Acer Aspire laptops in Amazon's Bestsellers list, the EasyNote TJ65 will seem familiar; the reason being that Packard Bell is now a subsidiary of Acer.

The TJ65 looks more expensive than it really is, thanks to its clean, simple and tasteful design. A lot of entry-level laptops look really cheap and tacky, but the TJ65, with its jet black body and futuristic silver trim, manages to look sophisticated, smart and professional.

At 3.75 cm the TJ65 is quite a thick laptop, an extra 1.34 cm thicker than either of Apple's 13 and 15-inch MacBook Pros. However, the beveled edge of the chassis and the smooth plastics used compensate for the elevated typing position and provide a comfortable area to rest your wrists. The weight of the TJ65 is also surprisingly good at 2.58 kg; just 0.09 kg heavier than a 15-inch MacBook Pro.

The 15.6-inch LED-backlit glossy display is truly state-of-the-art, with a proper widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, not 16:10 as found on the majority of computers. It's gorgeous to look at, with crisp, vibrant colours, and solid blacks. However, don't be fooled into thinking a 15.6-inch display offers you more space to work on than a 13.3-inch one. With just 1366 x 768 pixels, you don't gain any screen real estate over a smaller laptop; you just see the same thing magnified.

The 16:9 display is perfect for watching 720p HD content on, and the integrated Intel GMA 4500M graphics chip is fully capable of handling it. HD video can be streamed off the BBC iPlayer and YouTube in full screen mode, with no jerky frame rates or excessive fan noise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Affordable and capable... 20 Oct 2009

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I admit I was a bit biased against Packard Bell because I've been around home computing long enough to remember them as a manufacturer of not-very-exciting 'budget' PC's (I'm being diplomatic here) 25 years ago. Times change and Packard Bell are now owned by Acer - and it shows.

The TJ65's glossy 'Moonstone' (aka 'brown') top is restrained but different and tones well with the glossy/matt black interior - it does all look a little bit plastic-y but actually feels solid and well-made with no creaky-squeaky sounds as you use it. The keyboard includes a numeric keypad which can be a real advantage, especially if you spend a lot of time in spreadsheets or accounts software. There are also a few useful gesture-controls supported by the trackpad, some aren't enabled by default and you must go to Control Panel/Mouse to configure them. The touch-buttons along the top of the keyboard allow you to adjust or mute the volume, disable the touchpad, toggle power-saving, toggle WiFi and initiate a one-touch backup solution PB have included (which of course requires an external storage solution). There's also an indicator light for Bluetooth here which is annoying since PB haven't included a bluetooth chip in this laptop, which is a real shame.

The glossy screen has an LED backlight so it's very bright and clear and doesn't need to 'warm-up' to reach full brightness. The viewing angle isn't the best I've seen - it's almost always an issue with laptop screens - and altho it's fine for general computing it's not so good when you play a DVD movie and you might notice the dreaded 'negative-shadow' more than you'd like - especially in movies with a lot of dark scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars PB Easynote TJ65 25 Sep 2010
I own the Windows 7 version and its great. The screen is crytal clear when watching DVD and the computer is the fastest lap top I have ever owned. I bought it because I travel a lot. The battery life is better than I expected after owning it for a year. Overal I have dropped it damaged the shell smashed the screen and its still plodding on. I will certainly buy another one when this does finally kick the bucket.
