1.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and portable and broken 24 Oct 2009

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a top specification notebook which will appeal to these who need good graphics performance in a compact package. The potential for exceptional battery performance and its relatively green credentials will appeal to the travelling professional who seeks admiring glances in second class (on my train you get a plug socket in first).

The specs speak for themselves with a large hard drive, good processor and massive RAM; this little beauty makes my desktop PC seem very tired. It looks great as well - with a fantastic looking combination of dark grey and shiny piano black this oozes class. Lots of rounded corners as well and a keyboard which I find very comfortable. It is noticeably cooler than other laptops if you do end up with it on your lap. The 13.3 wide screen I find a great compromise size - certainly in word documents, but can be a tad small for spreadsheets. Much more useable on web pages than the size 10 netbooks.

So far so good, but there is always a downside! The not so good include only 3 usb points 2 of which are needed to power the external DVD writer (which comes bundled). In fairness though one usb has been sacrificed to make room for an HDMI which is a welcome addition. The piano black looks great but certainly shows the finger prints and in my experience is apt to scratch. I am used to working with an external DVD writer on my laptop and on balance if you are using the machine in a portable capacity a lot it makes sense not to carry it unless you really need to. However the limited usbs and external writer make this machine less good as a desk top replacement linked up to a large monitor, keyboard and mouse.

A word about the software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine 12 Mar 2010
This is a fantastic buy, especially given the price at this moment in time.

I am currently using this laptop to type this review, and have absolutely no complaints.

This is a great compromise between a netbook and a conventional 15inch laptop. It's very portable, without being too small to type on, and the screen is the perfect size, combined with the ultra efficient LED backlighting and hd resolution.

Obviously there are faster processors on the market, however given this is an ultra low voltage processor, and gives you an extremely long battery life between charges. I gave it an initial first full charge, then proceeded to load up vista. I got about 5 and a half hours with the machine constantly installing and downloading updates. After the next charge I got considerably more using the laptop more conventionally for internet browsing etc. The 4gb of ram and 500gb harddrive make this a perfect buy. I have no qualms about the performance and speed of the processor, load up time is the only time you notice this is less powerful from the bigger core 2 duo processors.

Add in the included DVD rewriter (external), this was a welcome surprise in the box, and is extremely small and portable, easily fits in the front pocket of a laptop bag along with the compact charging unit.

I would highly recommend anyone to consider this as an alternative to a bigger machine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely little laptop 2 Nov 2009

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I have been using an old Dell Laptop with a 15" monitor for the past 3 years. It is getting a bit slow so this seemed like a good option to replace.

I have only ever used XP before so I will try to keep this review to the hardware. As the spec states, this laptop ships with Adobe elements which is a very good basic photo manipulating package. I am used to Adobe Photoshop CS so this is a poor man's version with some nice new features. Vista itself seems like a refined XP and is a delight to use. I removed the Office trial version and installed Office 2003 which I know well. On the software, I tried to install my licensed copy of Office XP Frontpage but the laptop would not even run the installation software. I assume it is not compatible with Vista.

Back to the hardware .... If you are purely going for looks, I would not recommend this machine. It feels qiote plasticky compared to the metalic feel of the Dell. This will reduce the weight but it will take me a while to get used to. The keyboard is great and much more responsive than the Dell. The screen is bright and beautiful and wonderful for viewing photos etc. I have never used a built in webcam and I am very impressed.

This laptop comes with a quickstart guide but no other paperwork. I like to have a reference and although there is a help screen on the computer, it would have been nice to have an instruction book. Maybe that's me being old fashioned!!

The reason why this laptop looses a star is the sound. The blurb talks about filling the room with sound. Maybe I have to alter my settings but it sounds awful. very tinny and not like a room full at all. This laptop also gets very hot.
