5.0 out of 5 stars Good all round package 2 Jun 2003
By Chris
If you're new to Go and you'd like a reasonable introduction and a usable board and stones to practice with, this is a good package and worth buying. The board is approx 28cm square, made from sturdy cardboard and has a 19x19 board on the main side and a 9x9 board on the reverse and folds in half. The stones are small plastic things about 15mm in diameter and 4mm thick. This makes them a little fiddly to handle but overall the set is quite usable for a beginner as a practice or travel set. The book itself is a bit dry to read but covers all the basics regarding life and death, eyes, capture and includes problems and a complete sample game, which is very useful to read. I recommend playing it out on the board too along with all the problems and examples. Overall a good all round package and worth the money. If you've been playing for a little while you'll probably want something more than this so go for a more advanced study book and a nicer board, bowl and stone set.

The book component of this pack is pretty good for new players, there are plenty of puzzles to get your mind around, and a specimen game which you might want to hold off reading until you've played a few games.
The `stones' are plastic - about the right diameter but a little thin - but they're what I'd expect at this price.
The board is double-sided, 9x9 on the reverse, 19x19 on the top. The 9x9 board is useful for quick games, life/death puzzles, and teaching, but you won't use it much after the first 10 games I wouldn't think.
The major problem with this set is that the 19x19 board has the lines slightly too close for comfortable playing. There isn't a lot in it - but you'll find a blob of blu-tac pretty much essential for removing dead groups because the stones are so light they'll knock off position at the slightest touch.
The fold down the middle of the board is visually annoying - but more importantly it makes the middle row slightly thinner than the rest - so you can't actually fit 19 stones across the board.
In short - if you want a set to give to someone who you aren't sure will get into go, this is probably a good pack. If you want a set to travel with, this is OK if you can live with the restricted space. If you know the game, and want to get a set for your home and a book to improve your game - buy this (or another) book, but get at least a wooden board with glass stones.
The rating really depends on what you're trying to get out of it, but 2 to 2.5 out of 5 seems fair overall...

I think this is the same pack that I own, bought a couple of years ago. If it is it contains a workable but not all that durable board, stones and a paperback copy of McFaddyen's book. It provides a good basic intro to the game but is not as detailed as other books which are available Overall I think the price tag is a little high when compared to similar packs for chess which are readily available at lower price tags but it is not bad. Now all I need is someone to play against....

3.0 out of 5 stars Good starter set, but ... 31 Dec 2007
I really wanted to play Go, and bought this set as it was the best price for a game and book that I could find. However, there is one niggle I have (apart from the board game size that others have mentioned). There are a few basic rules that aren't well explained. For example, there's nothing that tells you whether or not you can use the empty space that you create when you surround your opponents stones. For a complete beginner playing against another complete beginner this isn't very good or helpful, especially once you know the answer and find that you've been playing the game incorrectly for a couple of weeks!

In short, it's a good starter kit, but make sure you have a more experienced player to help mentor your first games - and be prepared to get another book to answer those questions you are bound to have!

4.0 out of 5 stars complete starter kit 16 Feb 2000
By Paul DeLong - Published on Amazon.com
The box came with a nice portable board that folds in half, and has a smaller board on its flipside. The pieces are decent for the price tag. More importantly though, it also comes with an excellent pocket-sized book that teaches you all the rules you need to know, and enough tactics and strategy to get you started. Its explanations are clear and it has helpful exercises and accompanying solutions which clarify the rules. The only pet peeve I have is with the twelve challenge problems at the end of the book. The author provides hints, but intentionally omits the solutions. He gives a URL for his homepage, where he claims he has the solutions to the challenge problems, but that link is broken. If anyone finds the new address, please email it to me (or just email me the answers).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great package for beginners 25 May 2002
By Ken Braithwaite - Published on Amazon.com
This comes with a nice (albeit rather small) set with a board and plastic pieces. The accompanying book is a nice introduction for absolute beginners. It is also a well made book, sewn in signatures so it won't fall apart. You'd be hard pressed to find a book and a set at this price. The book covers the rules and some basic tactics and then has one game examined to show some strategy. A great way to start out and see if you like the game.
The next step would be to get Iwamoto's excellent "Go For Beginners" (rather meatier than the book here, and a superb book) or the series of books by Janice Kim. Then Ishi Press has a series of books, mostly by James Davies. If you do want to get more serious about the game you will certainly want to get a bigger and better set. For that check out Yutopian.
Incidentally you can play Pente aka Go-moku aka 5-in-a-row on this set as well.
