I refer you to the two excellent and full reviews on Amazon.com by old Amazon hand Larry Cantrell and one G. Dowling. The big difference between them is that Mr Cantrell gives this fve stars and Mr Dowling only two. Funnily enough, and although Larry Cantrell and I often share the same taste, I am with Mr Dowling on this one. I was going to review the set more fully, but he has said pretty much everything I would say - and in any case, I have tried no less than four times to listen to it all through and have fallen asleep on every occasion - which I hope tells you as much about the opera as my narcolepsy...

It really does "just [drone] along for a couple of hours", as he says and although I thought I would be content to hear Leyla Gencer sing the telephone directory, I cannot sustain my interest in this one. Perhaps the poor recording quality - poor even by Opera d'Oro's varying standards - has a lot to do with it, and the supporting cast - a stentorian voiced Louis Quilico notwithstanding - is less than stellar, but I suspect that the lack of thrills is mainly the result of Pacini's rather mundane melodic gifts; inspiration is in short supply. It's well crafted and should work -but there's no spark. I'm not saying it's bad; try it for yourself if you like the sampler snippets - but I think I know why it's rarely performed. I derive infinitely more pleasure from Pacini's first big hit "L'ultimo giorno di Pompei" (see my review), which might be more derivative of Rossini but has much more to entertain the ear, in a superior performance headed by Raul Gimenez.
