When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. How many movies have we seen in which the 'Golden Gate Bridge' is
destroyed ? ....well, I haven't got an answer, however seems to me
it occurs during just about every disaster movie....and yes, if but
briefly 'Pacific Rim' joins that ''elite'' club.
The Film....Over-sized alien beings 'The Kaijus' begin to arrive on
earth arriving through a porthole below the waves of the 'Pacific'
Five major cities are destroyed before the military are able to combat
the new enemy.
The invasion continues, man has to come up with a monster of their own
....Giant Robots called 'Jaegers' controlled to do battle by two pilots
on board.
However, it seems this may not be enough to stop the 'Kaijus' coming,
the 'Jaegers' program seems too be failing, the world is on the verge
of defeat.
A former pilot is teamed up with an unlikely co-pilot to operate an
outdated 'Jaeger' to do battle.
This may well be man's last stand ahead of an ''almost'' certain alien
victory bringing about the end of human existence.
The visual effects which are indeed impressive make the movie well worth
watching,
The 2D and 3D imagery will almost certainly keep the film alive for viewing
pleasure.
Great picture and sound quality throughout.
A 3-Disc set which includes the usual commentary.........'Disk three' is all
about 'Special Features' with hours of content which includes,,,featurettes
providing in-depth looks at 'Kaijus' ....along with a look at 'Sets' 'Stunts'
'Sounds' 'Effects' and the Mythology of making the film....and so much more.

The biggest praise I can give Pacific Rim is the fact that I was grinning from ear to ear for the vast majority of it. Guillermo Del Toro's passion and flair are evident throughout and the attention to detail in both the Kaiju and Jaeger design deserves a lot of credit. Del Toro said his aim was to make you feel like an excited 12 year old again whilst watching Pacific Rim, he certainly succeeded.

I'm an intelligent, discerning woman aged 49, and normally I'd never go to see this kind of film, which I'd expect only teenage boys to enjoy. I'd usually choose a quality drama, an indie film, a chick flick or an occasional thriller. But...I caught this by chance....and to my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, to the extent that I'd probably have happily seen it twice. I thought it was far more entertaining throughout than this summer's Superman film, and certainly better than Brad Pitt's Zombies. I've even pre-ordered 2 DVDs - one for me, and one for my teenage nephews. 8 or 9 out of 10.

You might be hoping that this film will somehow transcend it's simple synopsis, perhaps because of the provenance of its director, but if you are older than 9, you will be disappointed,

Totally devoid of any original ideas or invention, even it's CGI is stale and unimaginative (look no further than Life Of Pi if you want an unparalleled visual experience).

Confirms what we already suspected about the director. A very minor talent.

(2 stars because my 9 year old son liked it. Just liked it, not loved).

After a couple of false stars, director Guillermo Del Toro finally gets another movie under his belt, with a film designed to appeal to the big kid in all of us.

This is one of those movies that has to get the exposition in at the start: monsters christened Kaiju are attacking coastal cities, after appearing from the depth of the ocean. Humanity fights back with Jaegers. Giants robots that can beat Kaiju in a one on one fight. Jaegers are each controlled by two human pilots, whose minds need to be very compatible in order to be in sync.

Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket [Charlie Hunnam] is introduced to us in this opening sequence, which sets the scene with the aforementioned exposition, gives you a spectacular battle scene in stormy weather, and a very visually arresting conclusion. Plus putting Raleigh at the start of a character journey.

Flash forward a few years. With Raleigh no longer in the Jaeger programme. And said programme seemingly done for as governments go for big walls on the coast instead, the Jaeger programme has to survive on it's own. It's leader Stacker Pentecost [Idris Elba] bring Charlie back into the fold.

But with an obsolete machine and an untested partner, can everything come together in tome to save humanity?

The film does feature a fair few other moments of Jaegers battling monsters in the ocean, story or otherwise. All of which re pretty spectacular visually.

Charlie Hunnam is a capable lead. Idris Elba makes an effortlesly good commander figure. Comic relief comes from Burn Gorman and Charlie day as a pair of squabbling scientists. These characters are played just right, never going for stereotypes or easy laughs.

There's also a pair of tough Australian Jaeger pilots with family issues.

Watched this movie as Blu ray and decided to get it in 3D..and it's on par with Avatar if not equal...It's a stunning movie with lots of action...Yes it's cheesy..but these type of movies are...but they are also great fun to just sit and enjoy and not to be taken seriously..The sound surround is first class too and the steering amazing..Highly recommneded not only as a movie but the quality of it too as in sound and vision.
