Product Description

Product Description

As a member of the first-ever manufactured group, Michael Nesmith needs little introduction. Aside from his ground-breaking projects in the field of music video and film production, he has enjoyed a solo career since he left the Monkees that has encompassed many styles of music, but has always been supported by his wonderful songwriting. Nesmith will playing four concerts in the UK at the end of October, the first solo concerts he has played here since 1975, and will be touring the US with Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork as The Monkees later in the year. Amongst the many stand-out songs featured across the four albums are the Top 30 UK hit “Rio”, “Magic”, “Laugh Kills Lonesome” and fabulous live versions of “Different Drum, “Silver Moon”, “Papa Gene’s Blues”, “Propinquity”, “Some Of Shelly’s Blues” and “Joanne”. The five promo videos on the bonus DVD appeared in the Grammy™ Award-winning “Elephant Parts”, although the film for “Rio” was originally made to promote the UK single release

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love This Guy..! 18 Dec 2012
By SeaWasp
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
You either like Papa Nez or you don't. If you're a fan then this is a great little box set. Four original albums along with their original art work. The fourth album, "Live At The Britt Festival", doubles up on a few songs but also includes live versions of Mike's earlier recordings.. even "Papa Gene's Blues" from his Monkee days but you wont hear him say "Play, Magic Fingers" before the instrumental break, nor "Pick it, Wilson" during same. The newer live versions don't stray too far from the originals.. just far enough to make it all interesting and very listenable all over again, plus it's also a nice representation of Michael's RCA days.

"Tropical Campfires", a kind of Jimmy Buffett Meets Roy Rogers effort, is truly sublime. Nez has a way with a lyric and a hook. It's been a while since a song (or songs) has swum around in my head long after I have turned off the cd player and "Tropical Campfires" is full of gorgeous melodies.Nesmith sure can write 'em and the two Cole Porter tunes go down a treat as well. Mike does them justice in his laid-back Texas way.

"Infinite Rider.." rocks a little harder than the other stuff. "Horserace" reminds me of Dr Hook's "Let Me Be Your Lover". "Magic" is 50s-style doo-wop that actually works and "Cruisin'" always makes me smile. Contrary to popular rumour, it is NOT Hulk Hogan in the film clip of that song.

"..Radio Engine.." is the earliest album here (1977) and, although it is my least favorite, it has many fine moments. The classic "Rio", "Love's First Kiss", "The Other Room" and (heh-heh) "The Navajo Trail", an old chestnut to which Nez gives his sweet, spacey stamp. Nice..!!

The 21 minute dvd consists of 5 promotional films that we have seen before on the Elephant Parts "video album".

4.0 out of 5 stars pacific arts box 12 Feb 2013
By gerrard
Format:Audio CD
This is a really nicely presented box similar in size to the sony original classics series but better quality and with a flip open cover like turning a page of a book that keeps the contents safe and sealed inside. There are three studio lps one each from '77 and '79 one from '92 and a live album from '92 aswell.the sound quality is very good with the last two cds featuring a full Dolby surround mix.there is an accompanying booklet where Michael gives a little background info on each release.as a bonus there is also an NTSC region free dvd of five songs in 4:3 ratio which doesn't look to have been remastered but is still perfectly watchable.for under 15 this is great value for Nesmith fans

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the masterpiece I thought it would be 3 Nov 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Pacific Arts Box by Mike Nesmith contains 4 CDs, 3 of his early solo albums and a fairly recent live recording. While I had the studio albums already, I was getting this because of the live disk. The solo albums hold up fairly well over time, but the live CD was a very big disappointment. Nes as he calls himself was particularly chatty on the disk, to the point of you really want him to shut up and play. The song selection isn't great, his performance isn't all that great, and as much as I wanted to like this set, I pretty much gave it one listen and put it on the shelf. If you are a Monkee's fan, you probably will not appreciate what Nes is doing here, but if you were a fan of his solo stuff, you will probably enjoy it once.

4.0 out of 5 stars Come To Papa Nez 30 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I re-acquired these as my originals were getting scuffed. Great quality on new set and a bargain price. It's Marmite music - you'll either love or hate it. Part brilliant, part pretentious, but totally listenable. Come back Papa Nez.
