Biography

Radiohead created a rock grunge sound influenced by Nirvana and the Pixies in the nineties, with albums like Pablo Honey and The Bends. In the 2000s, they Merged electronica with abrasive guitar with Kid A and Amnesiac. They inspire the listener to be uplifted and reflective in equal measure. Their most critically acclaimed album, 1997's OK Computer, has been nominated as one of the greatest… Read more in Amazon's Radiohead Store

By Mr. M. A. Reed TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
They started off as pale Pixies clones on the coattails of the now-reviled wave of British Indie. Radiohead could so easily have ended up like Kingmaker, one hit wonders rubbing shoulders with Sultans of Ping, and endlessly playing "Creep" to half-full 1500 seaters inbetween day jobs.

On the strength of the debut, the underwhelming "Pablo Honey", Radiohead were one who, it seemed, had only a handful of good songs, an EP squeezed to LP length."Pablo Honey" is, for its time, an OK lp. But Kingmakers "Sleepwalking" was better.

And you know it.

"Pablo Honey" wears its influences brazenly on its sleeves. It wants to be The Pixies, crossbred with Dinosaur Jr and a touch of Steve Albini. But it isn't. Some of the songs simply put, are nothing but juvenalia. "Ripcord", "Vegetable", and others are forgettable, scant, empty, shallow impersonations. They are, in a word, rubbish.

Inside Radiohead, lay a pretty good debut. Sadly, great songs such as "Banana Co" and "Yes, I Am" were relegated to B-sides, and the versions and recordings chosen for the album were bland and monotone. Not only that, but the sequencing is all over the place. There's some good songs here, but not enough to justify an album.

Thankfully, EMI have chosen to exercise their contractual rights and exploit the work. This reissue is certainly far more useful than the recent 'Best of'. The second disc captures every B-side and some radio sessions in order of release. And whilst this completely lacks any narrative - its just a bunch of good songs in a random order - the songs themselves here, some of them are fabulous. The aforementioned "Banana Co" is simply a fabulous song, head and shoulders with any of their other work.

And some are rubbish : the middle section consists of a slew of live tracks, largely chosen to pad out multi-formatted releases of 12" singles. They weren't much good then and they aren't now.

Thankfully, the DVD offers much better value, with all the promo videos from the era, and most of the "Live At The Astoria" DVD. In total, though, it is a fabulous package for a Radiohead nutter : every song from their earlier era, alongside some tasty and unreleased radio sessions and a brace of live stuff on a DVD. It is a value package that tidies up most of the early years in about 55 songs of joy, most of which you may have never heard before.

I think i am in agreement with a few other commentators and have often wondered why Pablo Honey gets such a hard time from Radiohead critics and indeed, Radiohead. For me its a great debut and the precursor to one of the finest albums ever made - The Bends (which Radiohead also grumble about because they were asked to produce an album of 'Creeps' as opposed to being able to express their own artistic freedom). Pablo contains many gems and in fact i don't believe has any naff records on it at all (although you could argue some are fillers). This is adrenaline fuelled guitar rock - layered and complemented with Thom's beautiful voice being put to great use. 'You', 'Thinking about you', Vegetable', 'I can't', 'Anyone can play guitar' and 'Blow out' are great stand out tracks aside from the anthemic 'Creep'. However, a whole new treasure chest of songs is uncovered on this special edition second disc. 'Inside my head', 'Million Dollar Question', 'Killer Cars (Live)', 'Pop is dead', 'Banana Co.' and the awesome 'Nothing touches me' provide amazing high's and dazzling sing-a-longs that will be sure to get you tapping your hands and feet whilst maybe reminiscing about the type of atmosphere you have experienced among small crowds that jump around ecstatically, spilling their drinks and hanging on to every punk-esque gesture.
This is Radiohead young, angry, energetic and aspirational. Most of all this is Radiohead as a true guitar band making records that compliment the bands finest characteristics (inventive guitar, angelic vocals and contagious melodies). The sounds are inviting and passionate probably designed for people of a similar age who also aspire to be rock stars if only in imagination.
Later, the band would get what they want and get express their artistic freedom by tinkering with drum loops and casio keyboards. The remainder of the band would frequently sound redundant in what often would feel like some glamorised solo project which spits out cold, soulless sounds they try to pass of as songs. Thom's incredible voice would be seldom be put to good use but their enigma would grow as would the interest from across the Atlantic. This is Radiolhead pre-pregnant with some KID A, this is Radiohead pre-pretenious. Enjoy!

An excellent reissue package for an underappreciated album. 6 April 2009
By Pen Name? - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The first disc in this package is simply a re-issue of the original Pablo Honey album, an album which features unique moments in the Radiohead catalogue and also establishes elements of their sound that would be further developed on The Bends and OK Computer. But the album is often simply dismissed by critics as something derivative of other acts and/or lacking in quality next to later Radiohead albums. (It's a viewpoint also often directed towards Blur and their debut Leisure, also a great record.) I think so much of that posturing is just a result of not giving the record a chance on its own terms. Songs like "You," "Blow Out" and "Creep" retain their immediate power to this day, and the album as a whole really does not suffer from a feeling of datedness (like much of the other alt-rock of the 1993-4 era.)
The bonus features in this package really help to further establish Pablo Honey as a worthy starting point in the Radiohead discography by putting the 12 album tracks in a broader context of the band's work at the time. The second disc features the long out of print debut EP "Drill" and it's four demo tracks. The version of "You" and "Prove Yourself" were already fine at that point, while the jangly power-pop version of "Thinking About You" is revelatory for those yet to have heard it, and it makes one wonder how much potential Radiohead could have had to explore quite different musical avenues. The rest of the second disc gives all of the b-sides and released live tracks from the era, including the "Pop Is Dead" ep (another wrongly maligned release.)
Finally, a DVD features the four videos from the period (The staged live show of "Creep," the humorous rock star posturing of "Anyone Can Play Guitar," the fun and enegetic "Pop is Dead," and an REM-esque video for a faintly U2-esque song "Stop Whispering.") In addition to the videos, all of the tracks from the 1994 Astoria concert dvd from the Pablo Honey era are here (unfortunately the concert is broken up, so the other tracks appear on the reissue for The Bends) and there is also a cut performance of Creep from Top of the Pops, which is silly, as TOTP always is.
The videos and the Astoria tracks really cement how much Radiohead stood out against the hundreds of alt-rock bands of the time. Thom certainly had his own voice at the time, even if it wasn't the exact voice he would keep over the next 7 albums. The power of the live performances really brings out the full energy of all the tracks, and all of the songs played prove to stand as excellent live material.
Also included in the package are cards for each of the EP covers with replicated coverart. There is also a reproduction of the original album booklet. All 3 discs come in cardboard slip-cases.
An excellent package that presents Pablo Honey-era Radiohead in a proper light, as an excellent and emerging band with a great live show and some real range to their musicianship and lyricism. So, enjoy it again for itself and if you are a more recent fan who never got into it the first time, now is a great time to get over the negativity you've probably heard lobbed toward this record and give it a go on its own terms.

I feel somewhat tricked though 25 April 2009
By Buckingham - Published on Amazon.com

I'm not about to give this reissue 1 star because the content just don't deserve it. It's a great album, sometimes showing a tougher and more human edge to Radiohead that I've always thought future albums lacked (despite they had way much more to offer).

The problem is that I'm buying this album once a year. Two years ago when I discovered it, last year in the box set, and now. While the first reissue added nothing, this one has lot of really good bonus material.
Nothing to complain about the packaging either, they done a good job.
It's just that I say like the man bleeding and diying tied to a chair pleeding Kanye West to "get" the gayfish joke in the South-Park episode.
Come on EMI, just "GET IT"!
We are no fish!

I've always like to have bonus material, it helps you understand the context of the album you listen to, but I come to a point when I HOPE
there won't be a super deluxe edition 3cd 2dvd with exclusive unreleased material any soon.

Worth the upgrade 25 April 2009

Even though it is annoying how the record companies keep making us re-buy stuff we already have, the bonus material on all 3 of the new Radiohead reissues makes it well worth the purchase.
