Atomhenge really must be applauded, their first batch of Hawkwind [ and Hawklords ] reissues are superb.Remastered, briming with extra tracks and alternate takes, packaged with informative sleevenotes that finally bring some welcome cohesion to the latter Hawkwind legacy.
P.X.R.5 is a real curio, essentially a contractual filler for the bands deal with Charisma, the sheer quality of the material on the original album, now augmented with some truly superb additions belies any notion that the Bob Calvert fronted Hawkwind were a spent force musically.Tracks like Uncle Sams On Mars, Jack of Shadows, and the stunning Robot merely prove that Hawkwind rose to the challenge of the new wave, and met it full on with vigour and enthusiasm. If P.X.R.5 was Calvert's swansong as an active member of Hawkwind, then its fair to say he bowed out with typical grace and style.
Although there are repeats of certain tracks, each new version has its merits[ in particular, the Adrian Shaw vocal mix of Jack Of Shadows, offers an interesting contrast to the Calvert takes].However, for me the real treat on the album is the lost single "We Like To Be Frightened", a concise pop rock track that is an affectionate homage to old horror films.Vocally the track is very similar to Damnation Alley [ from Quark Strangenes, and Charm],but with a popier edge and length [ 2m, 44s]. Its one of the most commercial songs Hawkwind have ever recorded, and is almost worth buying the cd for on its own.
Overall,P.X.R.5 is one of the finest examples of an album of cast offs, and unused tracks you are likely to hear. Now enhanced with a further 8 unreleased oddities,it acts as a neat bookend to Hawkwind's often overlooked Charisma period, and is proof that in a more stripped down guise, the band rode the late seventies musical firestorm better than most of their contemporaries.
