Twilight - a New Dawn in Radio

Twilight combines an energy efficient lamp featuring flexible lighting options with a digital and FM radio alarm clock to deliver the ultimate bedside experience.

Twilight’s six LED lights use 5.4W compared to the 45W of an equivalent incandescent bulb and provide a whole range of lighting options from a warm glowing nightlight, dawn simulation and coloured mood lighting to a simple bright reading lamp.

Built in lullabies including ‘twinkle, twinkle, little star’ and ‘rock-a-bye baby’ and sounds like ‘wind chimes’ and ‘cicadas’ provide an assortment of relaxing ambient sounds. Combine them with preset lighting moods like ‘Fire’ or ‘Ocean’ and Twilight can bring calm to the most hectic of days.

Twilight is also a fully featured digital and FM radio or you can plug in your iPod/MP3 player. You can set up to four alarms with optional dawn simulation, plug in USB accessories or charge your mobile using the handy PowerPort*. Other features include stereo sound from 2 x 2.5W RMS full-range drive units, a headphone socket, sleep timer, large auto-dimming LCD display, touch-sensitive controls and satin-touch finish.

* Twilight features a PURE PowerPort. A standard 5V USB socket, PowerPort enables you to plug in and power USB accessories such as lights, fans, mobile phone chargers and more. PowerPort is not suitable for use with a USB hub or for charging items which draw more than 500mA of current (such as an iPhone 4 or iPad). Please check your product is suitable for use with PowerPort.

Waking up with PURE Twilight

Twilight comes with four sophisticated yet simple independent alarm settings, each with a dedicated button which can be set to wake to weekday, weekend or a one-off alarm. The touch-sensitive glass dome acts as an on/off/snooze switch for the alarms – great for night time use and ideal for when you want a few minutes more sleep!

The alarms give you the choice of waking to a tone, digital radio, FM, or special alarm tones including ‘church bell’ and ‘cockerel’ or PURE Sounds including ‘wind chimes’, ‘dawn chorus’ and ‘cicadas’.

Wake up naturally with the gradual dawn simulation lighting, helping to ease you into the day
Wake up naturally with the gradual dawn simulation lighting, helping to ease you into the day. Click here for a larger image.

All of these alarm sounds can be accompanied by dawn simulation which allows you to wake up naturally from light on a timer that increases gradually to mimic the rising sun before the chosen alarm is activated. When setting an alarm, select the light timer option - this helps to simulate daybreak by gradually increasing the brightness of the lamp before your alarm sounds. This brightening occurs at intervals determined by you (5 minutes to an hour).

Studies have shown that waking to a simulated dawn may help you to feel more refreshed and have a positive effect on your health. Twilight’s dawn simulation mode works perfectly with the “dawn chorus” natural sound and has been designed to help you to wake up feeling revitalised. Twilight also comes with embedded children’s lullabies and a night-light mode, making it perfect for a child’s bedroom.

Going to sleep with PURE Twilight

Twilight has a whole host of features to aid a good night’s sleep. Babies and young children can drift off to sleep listening to lullabies such as ‘twinkle, twinkle, little star’, ‘rock-a-bye baby’ or ‘Brahms’ lullaby’ and a nightlight can be set to any colour or brightness.

Twilight can be used as a reading light or can help you create a relaxing environment with its numerous mood light settings, a combination of mood lighting and natural sounds, or of course a favourite radio station.

Moods include ‘Rainbow’, which cycles through a spectrum of colours: ‘Fire’, which flickers between red and orange, simulating gentle flames; ‘Ocean’, which undulates from blue through cyan to green, giving a relaxing oceanic effect; ‘Wheat field’, which transitions between gold and green to conjure up the changing of the seasons; and ‘Party’, which uses flashing colours to create a disco feel.

You can even create up to three of your own colour presets, choosing a favourite colour from one of the full spectrum of colours and any brightness level. Ideal for when you want a favourite morning, afternoon and evening colour to suit your mood (or a nightlight for your children’s bedroom).

Turning the light on and off couldn’t be easier as Twilight’s glass dome is touch-sensitive and acts as an on/off switch for the lamp. Press and hold the lamp and the light dims or brightens gradually.

Twilight also has an advanced sleep timer which can also include the lamp, allowing you to fall asleep to one of the relaxing PURE Sounds, and a matching lighting mode, both of which will be turned off by your sleep timer. The light and sound will gradually reduce the brightness at intervals determined by you.

Digital Radio

With digital radio (DAB) you'll discover a broader range of music, debate and ideas, all in crystal clear digital sound. Digital radio offers:

Ease-Of-Use

Digital radios are much easier to use than analogue radios because they automatically search for all available stations. Once the radio has found all the available stations you just choose the one you want by name. No more trying to remember frequencies.

Wider Station Choice

You'll be spoilt for choice - as well as many of your existing favourite stations now broadcasting on digital radio, you'll also find great exclusive-to-digital stations and there are more on the way!

Digital Sound Quality

Digital radio is not subject to the same interference as analogue radio resulting in crystal clear, interference free listening.

Having seen this product in a recent magazine I expressed an interest to my wife, not expecting to hear anything further but having returned home from a busy day for a birthday tea there it was.

My first impressions are all very positive, the changing light colours fascinate the children and the mood lighting is ideal for reading and relaxing in the bedroom and its also bright enough to provide plenty of room light I`m not sure when I will use the disco setting but who knows what future themes the kids birthdays will have.

I love being able to change the light levels by placing my hand on it - very sci fi and the alarm functions are all very good - 4 alarms - radio or themed etc. The light does come on quickly with the alarm, I was expecting something a little more subtle and I would agree that this needs a setting button so you aren`t confronted with bright light whilst still dozing.

The DAB radio itself is excellent quality, we have 3 other DAB radios in the house and this is by far the best quality, it also picks up more signals than the others.

The screen is clear and a big improvement on the bright red LED display on my old clock radio.

I would recommend it to anyone but it is expensive.

No doubt about it, this is the best radio alarm I have ever had.... and the most expensive!
Is it value for money? I was tempted to give it 4 stars because of the price but I couldn't bring myself to - it deserves five stars!

What I like about it:
Almost everything - here is a round up: Solid quality build, lovely gentle light, which is touch sensitive and can be set to slowly come on before the alarm, different coloured lighting, good quality sound, 4 alarms which can all be separately set, and more... I love it!!

What I don't like - not a lot
One minor point is the inbuilt alarm sounds (which are very good quality and challenge the radio as an option for waking up) have a very short cycle. That blackbird in the dawn chorus repeats it's self too quickly. If there was a longer loop it would be great to wake up to, but the sound quality is excellent.

One less minor point is the plug. I wish I could understand why a two pin plug is provided. I put it in an adaptor and it keeps slipping a bit and loosing main power (there is an inbuilt battery backup). I will have to think of something else. It shoud come either with a three pin plug or supply a proper adaptor.

The bottom line is would I choose it again? The answer is definately yes!

I bought the Pure Twilight to replace a Philips Wake-up Light, which I had been using for over a year.

Main selling points of the Pure Twilight over the Philips:
1) LED light, instead of the Philip's hard to find Softone incandescent bulb, which also tended to get very hot.
2) 4 separate alarms, configurable to run on weekdays, weekends, etc. The Philips has a single alarm that is either on or off.
3) USB charging socket (though the manual says it doesn't produce enough current to run an iPad or iPhone 4, it charges my iPhone 3GS just fine)

The settings on the old Philips are like any digital alarm clock- buttons serve two or more functions, and the layout is bizarre.
Also the volume and brightness dials stopped responding after a few months.

The Pure is more sophisticated, and has a menu system more like a mobile phone. There are two banks of dedicated buttons on either side of the display, with four touch-sensitive "soft" keys under the display. The time is set automatically from the radio signal, and programming multiple alarms was pretty straightforward. The only problem is that it's quite easy to brush the "Back" button by mistake (it's positioned between the up/down/select navigation buttons and the other 3 soft keys) and thus lose 4 menu's worth of choices.

The Pure's heritage as a radio rather than an alarm clock is revealed by the lack of polish in the alarm department. Although you can choose how long it takes the light to fade up before the alarm starts, you can't make the alarm sound fade up gently. Despite having a AUX input (3.5mm jack, perfect for an mp3 player), there's no option to choose the AUX input for the alarm, which would otherwise let me record a slowly fading wake-up track and trigger that using my iphone's inbuilt alarm. Also, there's no way to preview the alarm volume- you have to guess the right volume number and hope.

The touch control on the light is simple and effective when it works. Unfortunately, it gets very confused if you pick up the lamp (eg to wade through the menu system to set an alarm, or find a particular station). Which is a shame, as you really need two hands to use the system- even the volume buttons require enough force to move the whole unit if it's on a smooth surface (eg a wooden shelf).

The "mood" lighting options seem quite gimmicky at first glance, much like the Stadium or JazzClub settings on a surround amp, though some of the more subtle settings are ok. The dedicated Daylight button sets the lamp to a bright, some might say harsh, white light. I like it. It's bright enough to read by, and invigorating to wake up to.

The green clock display is easily legible, though I had to tweak the brightness setting up from the dim automatic level, supposedly based on ambient light levels.

But these are all minor niggles. Yes, it's an expensive device, but so was my old Philips and the Pure is much easier to use, more attractive to look at, and much more energy efficient.

The DAB radio works fine, by the way. Just remember to unwind the aerial before turning it on, or you won't see all the stations.

UPDATE: "The touch control on the light is simple and effective *** when it works ***". The touch-control mechanism is unreliable. It's based on a very simple pressure-switch under one section of the rim under the heavy, tight-fitting glass dome which needs to be very precisely placed for the switch to work as intended. Half the time it doesn't respond at all, and most of the rest of the time it treats a tap as the start of a long hold.
