I thought I was alone in having a Pure clock radio that kept Poor time. I owned a Tempus 1 for a couple of years, after which its display was so dim that it was barely readable. Plus, it was a power hog. So I replaced it with the latest version, latest display, low power consumption on standby, everything was looking good. Except...
One of my grouses with the original was that it was a Poor timekeeper! I had reported this to Pure. Surely they had solved that problem by now?
No they hadn't! In fact, they have a FAQ on their website about this, saying that the clock updates itself when powered on at the mains (correct!) and then hourly after that. And Pure have the gaul to say that it could only be out by a minute!
So, what could be the problem then? The problem is that you generally leave a clock radio on standby, so it never gets switched on at the mains after first installing it. The other part of the problem is that all those four alarms switch on for EXACTLY one hour. Hence, the radio switches itself off just before it might have updated itself. Even chaining three alarms end to end doesn't make any difference, the clock just thinks it has been on for one hour, three times.
Now, let's think about a phrase: CLOCK RADIO. What do you expect that to do? Perhaps you wake up at 6am to the news? NO YOU DON'T! You either wake at 6.03am half way through the news headlines or at 5.57am to some godamme awful farming program or the horrors of BBC World Service.
Solutions? I can think of a few, why can't Pure?
(a) An auxiliary quartz clock to keep it on time. That can be updated from the station time.
(b) Get it to update its time just before each alarm.
(c) Plug it into a mains timer. But then, why not buy a cheaper DAB radio without timers?
Contrary to what has been posted in another comment, it isn't station time that makes it go wrong. If it is wrong, power it off and on at the mains and see it correct itself.
I am leaving this review with a one star rating until Pure release a firmware patch for this problem. As and when they do, I will delete this review and write a review of all the other features of their radio.
EDIT: The BBC say they are accurate to within 2 seconds and send the time signal continually in the transport stream. Pure say that the BBC clock is out, as otherwise their clock would be correct. So why does powering off and on cause the radio to fetch the correct time?
EDIT: Pure Support say they can do nothing, the radio is discontinued now! They have closed my support ticket twice and I have re-opened it. This has to be the worst service ever. They don't even know what they still sell and refuse to correct errors.
EDIT: I have now bought a
PURE Siesta Flow, Internet, DAB and FM Clock Radio which keeps time perfectly. Come on, Pure, fix the Tempus!
