4.0 out of 5 stars PTU 12 Sep 2008
Format:DVD
PTU is a brutal thriller with splashes of dark comedy that takes place on the near deserted streets of Hong Kong in the very early hours of the morning. Seargent Lo has lost his gun after an encounter with the crew of a thug named Ponytail. It just so happens that Ponytail is murdered that same night by a rival gang. Lo is lucky enough to have ice cool PTU officer Sgt Mike Ho decide to help him. As Ho and his unit patrol the streets following up any leads, Lo betrays his duties and arranges a stand off between the two gangs on the promise that he'll get his gun back. This all culminates in a stand of between the two gangs, PTU, and CID who are investigating Ponytails death. The fact that this is all because a bungling officer lost his gun is made is made even worse thanks to the twist at the end.

PTU is a stunning looking film thanks to the strangely quiet streets. The sound is also very good with ambient surround effects really engrossing you in each scene. I thouroughly recommend this film for all film fans. If you're a fan of Hong Kong cinema or Johnnie To then it's an essential purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Hong Kong celluloid 21 Oct 2008
By Mr. G. Carroll VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Johnny To manages to capture the technicolour character of its Hong Kong locations. The film like Kurosawa's Stray Dog some 60 years before is centred around the loss and use of a police officer's firearm. Like Stray Dog the film moves through society on the trail of the gun.

The PTU of the title is the elite of the Hong Kong Police. The actors manage to wring every once of tension out of the plot and situations, but it not without its humour. The film has depth rather than a fast-paced slick Hollywood rollercoaster ride. I am very surprised that Hollywood hasn't licensed this for a shot by shot remake a la Infernal Affairs and The Departed.

5.0 out of 5 stars vintage Johnny To 17 May 2008
By Fantong
Format:DVD
Simon Yam plays the cop as well as he plays triad kingpin, this movie shows a Police unit patrolling Hong Kong's seamy side over one night, Lam Suet is great as the bumbling sergeant in this gritty but tongue-in-cheek drama, Johnny To does it again, I watch his movies over and over and they still appeal (as well as helping my Cantonese).
