Book Description

Grace McCreary swears she tried to stop her sister-in-law from jumping from her penthouse balcony but the police have a different take on the situation. They arrest Grace for murder which puts her brother, Senatorial candidate Matthew McCreary, in a spotlight he doesn't relish. Nor is he thrilled when Grace seeks out his former lover, Josie Baylor-Bates, to act as her defense attorney. Josie, who has sworn off rich clients, agrees to defend Grace but even she isn't sure why. She swears she believes in the woman innocence but in her heart she wants to prove that Matthew made a mistake letting her go.

Stepping back into the world of privilege and power, forced to face her feelings for a man she once loved, Josie is determined to win this case - even if she looses everything she holds dear.

"Living in Los Angeles makes one aware that the rich have a leg up in our legal system. People of privilege have a lot to protect and people they love can be at the end of the list." Rebecca Forster

More About the Author

I marketed a world class spa when it was still called a gym and did business in China before there were western toilettes at the Great Wall. Then I wrote a book on a crazy dare and found my passion.

Now, I am a USA Today best selling author with more than 25 books under my belt. I love everything about the law and my Witness Series, introduces readers to a beach town in Southern California and Josie Bates, a beach rat, volleyball playing attorney and her ward, Hannah Sheraton. I also like to stretch the thirller genre a bit. Before Her Eyes, for instance, has a tinge of fantasy along with the murder mystery and it's all wrapped up with a twist on the very last page.

I teach at UCLA Writers Program and work with The Young Writers Conference, a program that helps motivate middle school children to explore the power of words. I am particularly drawn to kids and writing because both my sons have always had a passion for it. Eric is a playwright and Alex is in film. I am long married to a Superior Court judge

When I'm not writing I'm traveling, on a tennis court, working a sewing machine or reading. Thank you so much for taking a look at my author page. You can find out more about me - and leave me a note - at www.rebeccaforster.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh what a tangled web her clients do weave 8 Feb. 2006
By Daniel Jolley HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I don't put a lot of legal thrillers on my personal reading list, but you'll never find me passing up a Rebecca Forster novel. The mystery and suspense of each Forster whatwhywho-dunnit will keep you flipping the pages relentlessly, but it is the heart and realism of her complex, incredibly human characters (flaws and all) that make Forster such a special writer. You won't find a missive of dry, boring legal fiction here, as Forster's heroine, Josie Baylor-Bates, seems to find herself in one extremely personal case after another. Josie's a remarkable woman - tall, athletic, unyielding, and yet quite vulnerable. In Hostile Witness, she made the case of a troubled young girl (the daughter of an old college friend) accused of murder a personal one - and ended up becoming the legal guardian of the accused. In Silent Witness, she defended the man she loves from a charge of murdering his own step-son, learning many unsettling things about him in the process. You would think that's about as personal as a case can get. You'd be wrong, as Privileged Witness reunites her with her first love, Matthew McCreary, a rising politician whose sister (a sister he had always told Josie was dead) stands accused of murdering Matthew's wife. Such an unwelcome blast from the past is never easy on a person, and that is especially true of this case's effects upon Josie. Privileged Witness explores Josie's character to previously unplumbed depths, making it - in my opinion - the "deepest" of the first three Josie Baylor-Bates novels. I didn't like everything I saw Josie do in this story, yet I could understand her motivations. A lot of authors would just sit back and give such a successful character a free ride, a veritable hero's parade to a brave finish. Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars A formula that works 24 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
‘Privileged Witness’ is Rebecca Forster’s third book in the Josie Bates legal thriller ‘Witness’ series. This book sees Josie attempting to defend Grace McCreary the the sister of an ex-lover Matthew McCreary, who is also a Republican Senatorial candidate. Grace is accused of killing Michelle, Matthew McCreary’s wife by pushing her off a balcony: while she maintains that Michelle had committed suicide. Defending the sister of an ex-lover, stirs up all sorts of feelings within her, which at times clouds her judgment regarding the case. The case also threatens to derail Matthew McCreary’s election campaign. The ‘Witness’ series sticks to a very well tried and tested formula, which in this case is a positive, because it is a formula that works very well. Although the formula is predictable, the story in my view is easy to read, fast paced with many twists and turns that keep you guessing to the end. So far for me, The ‘Witness’ series has been a guaranteed enjoyable read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I'd expected 23 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
After reading the first two books in Forster's "Witness" series I had high hopes for more courtroom drama in Privileged Witness. The second, Silent Witness was more investigation than cross examination and in this third, the bulk of the plot involved lawyer Josie Baylor-Bates' personal trials with a past she thought would not invade her here and now.
There's some quite clever twists to the storyline but when I pick up a book that is flagged up as having accurate courtroom drama - as I experienced in Hostile Witness (number 1) - I expect at least a fair amount so this was a tad disappointing.
A beautiful woman lies dead on the ground after plunging from a plush penthouse appartment, was she pushed, did she fall, did I really care?
Yes, I suppose I did want to find out if her husband, Josie's former lover, had dunnit but I would have preferred to have witnessed some courtroom action instead of following a lawyers investigation that should really have been led by the cops.
It was an okay read for me but anyone who enjoys a murder mystery would enjoy it more.

Storylines a little contrived and not always believable as to time scale.
Have read 1and 2. I was better than 2 and this one is on a par with 2
