5.0 out of 5 stars Its a winner 5 Feb 2009

My company has taken on Prince 2 training big time for most of the staff. having no project management experience I was booked on the foundation course so I bought a copy of this book. Its the best thing I did and helped me a lot. The actual Prince2 manual is more like a reference book where as the Dummies guide talks you through the process's in a more informal way. My advice is if you are going on the foundation or practitioners course then get this book.

An excellent well written structured overview of the international Project Management methodology. Author makes a pretty light-hearted read of a difficult subject. Recommended.

I decided to work through "Prince2 for Dummies 2009" before committing myself (and my bank account) to a formal course.

Prince2 is a set of project management principles that can be applied to pretty much any type or size of project. It's not a project methodology and it's not a substitute for knowledge of specific business areas, organizations or people.

This book goes through the Prince2 themes and principles clearly and logically, using real world examples to illustrate key points. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to find out what Prince2 is all about or who is preparing for a training course.

Whilst a knowledge of the official Prince 2 manual is essential for anyone wishing to use Prince2, it's not necessarily the best place to start. I worked through the Dummies guide without having access to a copy of the (pricey) manual and this didn't cause any particular difficulties.

"Prince2 for Dummies 2009" gave me the confidence to take a formal training course leading to Foundation and Practitioner exams (which I passed).

You know what you're getting with a "for dummies book". It doesn't go into too much detail (and God knows, there's a lot of detail in the official coursebook!) and that makes it easy to get some basic knowledge out of it. I bought this 2 weeks before I went on the Practitioner's course so I had both this and the official coursebook before I started the course. If you're coming to the practitioner course without any prior knowledge then the sheer amount of information injected into your brain over 3 and a half days or so can throw you a bit. and that's where this book comes in. Where the official coursebook is very dry nd details everything, this book gives you more "context" so you get a better feel for why things are done the way they are in Prince2 environments.
As a companion to the coursebook, I highly recommend it. If you're buying it just to get you through the Practitioner exam you should look for something else instead or to supplement it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review 9 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
Good value. I like the style of the dummy guides, an easy read. I would probably just have the pocket book if I were buying again. It provides sufficient information to understand what is going on. If you want certification this would be a good addition to the less easy manuals.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good companion to the official manual 29 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read the Kindle version of this book in conjunction with the official PRINCE2 (2009) manual as part of my preparations for the P2 exams.

It provides a lot more context than the official manual and is written in a much more enjoyable, informative and interesting way. It's no substitute for the manual if you're doing the exams, but it provides useful background and comments that really help to see how the ideas work in the real world.

You won't become a world-class Project Manager by reading this (or any other) book - but you're more likely to keep the PRINCE2 method in context and less likely to make totally dumb mistakes. Or at least I hope that is the case ...

A worthwhile investment - especially if you're looking for something a little more stimulating than the official manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Dummy Here! 10 Oct 2009
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
This was just the thing I needed to get the Prince2 ideals in a way that was easy to relate to and in a more logical format. I would advise anyone either taking the Course or working in a Prince2 environment to keep this close to hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great simple and easy to read 31 July 2009

Project managment is heavy going anyway so you will always need to concentrate a bit however a bit of humour comes in handy. You will gain a better understanding of the elements of project management however I will caution against using only this book for exams. The manual is the official reference book, the book will come in handy when trying to break down the jargon in the manual. Hope this helps.
