Product Description

Synopsis

RSD, also called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, is a debilitating, multi-system illness that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterised by severe nerve pain, changes in bone and skin, swelling, and extreme sensitivity to touch. In 65 percent of cases, simple conditions such as sprains or carpal tunnel syndrome escalate into RSD. Important facts about RSD: Women and people between the ages of 40 to 60 are most at risk. There is no known cure for RSD, but with prompt, effective treatment, many people go into remission or experience lesser symptoms. Interspersed with the author's own experience and other patient testimonies, this book combines medical information, practical advice and support - a critical component for readers contending with what can be a mysterious, excruciating illness. In addition, this book is the first to provide information on complementary and holistic therapies, treatments that can be crucial for maximising the potential for healing from RSD.

I do think this book is informative and well written but patients buying this book should be aware that it is not for those with advanced/long-term rsd. The advice is still valid in parts, but most of the suggestions become irrelevant when your chronic pain has become centralised or sympathetically independent. I was upset at some of the suggestions such as 'go for a hike' - hmmm... the author clearly had rsd in her hand and for only a year (not trivialising a single trick here, the pain is beyond words, it just comes across as not understanding long-term). For those of us who have had this dibilitating condition for over 6 years, the one place you would have thought you'd find sincere empathy, is a book on the disease. That's not to say don't have a read if you're advanced, but bare in mind it's for those blessed with early diagnosis.
