Product Description

Product Description

Popland is the story of a dreamy boy obsessed with Glam Rock artists via Top Of The Pops 2. We watch him grow from dyslexic boy to pro footballer then rock star. This book is a lively, hopefully insightful and sometimes funny account of the growing pains of life as a pop star, written by a man who has been there. The author Mickey Modern has been an original Mod, lead singer of punk band The Secret, has been a solo recording artist, a record producer, turned manager. He has developed and managed Nine Below Zero, Nik Kershaw, Dum Dums, Imogen Heap, Paul Barry, Horn, (now The Feeling), and briefly managed Bros, Steve Harley. Worked for various record companies, and he worked with lots of hit songwriters and top producers.

5.0 out of 5 stars I GIVE IT FIVE 11 Dec. 2013
If you've been in a band or had anything to do with music thats played in the London pubs then this is a must read. I now live in Brooklyn and the description of characters really took me back to days at The Bridge House, Hope and Anchor, The greyhound...etc etc etc and all the shenanigans. Mickey has done an excellent job of mixing his street experience with fictional vignettes. Great story & nice job all around.

5.0 out of 5 stars He was there......... 13 Dec. 2013

Written by someone who has a true insight into that audio stock exchange called the Music Industry. The short sharp chapters seem to eminate from a machine gun, each one stirring another memory. Anyone who dreamt of being a pop star played their cricket bat (in my case it was a tennis racket - I had illusions of grandeur) as well as Clapton or Townshend or belted out lyrics better than Kossof or Jagger. Mickey brings it all back with clarity and wit. Did I really waste my best fret fingering years working in an office? Mickey didn't so take a read and take a trip back in time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good insight to the modern music business 8 Dec. 2013

For a first attempt, this is a very good short novel, giving an insight to the wheeler-dealings of the modern music scene. The story charts the rise of Charlie. A young aspiring footballer and musician, Charlie is fascinated at an early age by pop music, specifically 70's pop music. After becoming entranced by the BBC programme top of the pops 2, he is bought a fender stratocaster copy and a marshall amp. From there on in he knows which way his life has to go.........
