5.0 out of 5 stars The end of slavery in the United States. 18 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
How much do you know of the background to Abraham Lincoln's magnificent work? Doris Goodwin has researched the period meticulously, reading not just the previously published histories and biographies, but also the unpublished letters and diaries of those who supported Lincoln through those troubled years. The end of slavery was not attained until many arguments had been presented, and many lives had been lost. The discussion was long-lasting and nation-wide.

Goodwin's book gives the background detail which was inevitably omitted in the recent film of Lincoln, great though that was. Daniel Day-Lewis presented a believable portrait of the man: and indeed it was that film which prompted me to buy the book, so that I could find out more about those years which were so important in the history of the United States. It was an iconic time. Read and learn,
