Product Description

CreateSpace uses it. Lulu.com uses it. So do AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Xlibris, and almost every other self publishing company in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K.

What is it? Lightning Source, the printer and distributor at the heart of the "print on demand" industry. For the work those companies can't handle themselves, it's Lightning they most often depend on.

So, why pay a middleman? In this follow-up to his groundbreaking book "Aiming at Amazon," Aaron Shepard explores how to double your profit by working directly with Lightning. If you're serious about making money with POD publishing, this book can show you the way.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////

Aaron Shepard is a foremost proponent of the new business of profitable self publishing through print on demand, which he has practiced and helped develop since 1998. Unlike most authorities on self publishing, he makes the bulk of his living from his self-published books -- not from consulting, speaking, freelance writing, or selling publishing services. In a parallel life, Aaron is an award-winning children's author with numerous picture books from publishers both large and small. He lives in Friday Harbor, Washington, in the San Juan Islands, with his wife and fellow author, Anne L. Watson.

Despite there being no reviews for this book at the time, the decision to purchase this book was, for me, easy. I had previously purchased, read and loved Shepard's 'Perfect Pages' and so, after searching for a book on Lightning Source in particular and subsequently coming across this newly published book, I did not hesitate.

I read the majority of the book in two days, though I skipped a couple of sections (notably, the more technical discussions on file creation, which I will refer to when I need this information). The book is easy to read, makes the learning process simple, and provides a wealth of valuable information, tips and useful guidance concerning what to do and, more importantly, what not to do.

Much to my delight, the book makes the not-so-simple process of LS seem less daunting. Shepard successfully breaks down each of the LS steps and highlights what should and shouldn't be done during each phase. Essentially, the book not only acts as an in-depth guide to publishing with LS, but also acts as a step-by-step guide, which can be referred to when progressing through each of the LS stages. Shepard also makes you stop and think and reconsider decisions you had previously made, such as the mark-up on your book and the discount offered to wholesalers, etc. Such discussions and the rationale provided for the choices he recommends will make me reconsider what I had previously believed were set-in-stone details.

I must note here, however, that my one disappointment with the book (which might actually be down to my own ignorance), is that Shepard makes reference to being able to acquire Acrobat Pro at a lower price, which he says will be covered later on in the book. However, I could not find this information. I will, of course, stand corrected if it is in the section of the book I neglected to read but, as I made sure I read each of the indexed references to Acrobat Pro, I fail to see how I could have missed it...

Nevertheless, I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who is seeking to profit from PoD, although this book is specifically aimed at those publishers seeking to do so from Lightning Source in particular.

I must also add here that one of my concerns with using LS was whether people would be able to find my book. However, considering the fact that one search revealed this book which is a) published by LS, and b) very new (only 6 weeks old at my time of purchase), I have now been able to put this concern to rest. Quite clearly, LS works, and I thank Shepard for illustrating that with this fantastic book.

POD For Profit by Aaron Shepard is a good book. It is 282 pages long and is split into 11 chapters and then subdivided into relevant sections. This is the first POD book (though not publishing) that i have read and I have learnt many new things.

As the old saying goes (but to reverse it?), we should not judge a book by its cover and this book should not be judged by its cover - but by its great content, which is laid out really well, easily read and is full of information - sometimes too much, especially in relation to distribution and who is who and who they work with and the sister company is etc. but surely it better to have too much than too little? The percentage discount was very informative and eye-opening.

Whilst i initially felt the book was a pound or two over priced for the number of pages (when i bought it via Amazon), it is surely worth it because of the excellent contents. I have also followed the authors blog for some time and knew that he knew his stuff! The index was also handy, though on two or three occasion the author mentions something's and then goes on -I'll cover that later, but does not give a page number for it - but you have the index, but to add a page number would have been helpful. : )

The author puts a few witty comments which go down really well, and which i appreciated. The section on copyright and foreign rights were very informative and the author is very honest in his own dealings and stories, as well as observation from others within the writing / publishing industry.

If you want to publish a book by the Print on Demand POD route then this is the book for you. It is a great investment, and even if you have already published a book or two, i am sure you'll find new information and much practical insights wisdom and helps.

Very helpful book on self publishing POD and one which you SHOULD buy and apply!

For UK readers 'cheque' is spelt 'check' within this book - the American way.

POD for profit is full of hitherto unknown essential facts. Aaron takes you on a journey from formatting for print (explaining the differences between the usual disciplines which we were taught v conventions for print) through to submission and beyond.
Legalities are given some thought along with the marketing aspect.
A full-rounded insight in what you need to know.
The only problem I found was the conflicting guidance of UK v US in some cases.
This is soon overcome by deciding which conventions you are to follow.
