Review

"Oscar is a great coach. In a few days he helped me regain my strokes and my feel for the ball."-Bjorn Borg, 5 time Wimbledon Champion, 6 time French Open Champion."

Product Description

Can tennis really be this simple?

Just ask the dozens of world-class players who have made it to the top using Oscar Wegner’s groundbreaking approach. But if playing tennis isn’t so easy for you, if you never seem to play up to your potential, don’t blame yourself—blame the coach who taught you a lot of uselessly complex techniques. Play Better Tennis in 2 Hours is your guide to tennis as the pros play it—more intuitive, more fluid, and more fun. World-renowned tennis coach and ESPN commentator Oscar Wegner shows you how to focus your efforts on one thing—hitting the ball correctly. Your own natural athleticism will take care of everything else. Follow the simple drills in this power-packed handbook, and you’ll learn how to:

  • Move to the ball efficiently and fluidly
  • Stop worrying about foot position and stance
  • Hit every stroke harder and more accurately
  • Put a wicked topspin on your forehand
  • Master both one- and two-handed backhands
  • Combine control and power on your volleys
  • Put more speed and spin into your serve and more punch in your return

"Known and respected all around the world, Oscar has given us another great contribution to tennis with this book."—Gustavo Kuerten, three-time French Open champion

"Oscar has broken the mold, demystifying the modern tennis stroke. There's genius in his analysis of pro techniques—the dynamics of what the racquet does to the ball, how power and spin are added. He understands how top pros really stroke the ball, and always have, all the way back to Tilden."—Andy Rosenberg, Director for NBC Sports Wimbledon and French Open

I just wanted to let people know that along with 'Winning Ugly' by Brad Gilbert which is a great book for the mental side of tennis, this book has to be one of the best Tennis books ever written.

Unlike Winning Ugly, this book is more focused on the technique of play rather than the mental and tactical game, and WOW does this book improve your game quickly.

I was a little dubious about whether my game could be improved in just 2 hours as suggested by the title of the book, but how wrong I was.

The techniques in this book throw a lot of conventional tennis coaching out of the window and instead focus on the way the pro's play and why they do what they do. Your stroke and body movement will improve quickly and if you are anything like me then within just a couple of days I was hitting more consistently and with more power than I have ever done previously, in fact just days after reading the book I played probably my most controlled game ever in an inter-club league match.

This book doesn't just come up with unfounded new ideas, but instead explains why you should play the way it suggests and then demonstrates how the top pro's already do what the book suggests, and best of all at the time of writing, this book isn't one written years ago and talking about old techniques but is based around the current game and talks about such greats as Federer, Safin, Roddick and Agassi.

If you never buy another Tennis Book then do yourself a huge favour and get this one because you won't regret it, loads of photos and written in a very easy to read style, oh yes and if you ever wondered why Tennis is scored in such a strange way (i.e 15,30,40, deuce, advantage etc.) then its worth buying the book just for the explanation, it seems so obvious once you know!

Enjoy...

I played quite a bit of (not very proficient) tennis as a kid and again in my late 20's and early 30's, but I never really had any meaningful coaching and I was always rather frustrated by the game. It always seemed too easy to hit the ball out and too difficult to keep it in! I took up squash in my late 20's and it became my racquet sport of preference for 15 years. Then, around 9 months ago, after recovering from a nagging leg injury, my wife suggested that I drop squash (which she didn't play) and take up tennis (which she did play and thought we could enjoy together). I duly did so, and (being an avid reader) purchased this book to remind me how to play. I can honestly say it has revolutionised my enjoyment of the game. His concepts of "finding the ball and accelerating only after feeling the ball on the strings" and "the windscreen wiper motion" have transformed me from an inveterate defensive slicer into a far more confident and aggressive topspin player in no time at all. His "topspin first and foremost" philosophy quickly inspired me to try the two-handed backhand (something I hadn't even thought to try before) and, understanding the key swing plane concepts for the first time, it all came to me rather easily to the extent that my backhand is now at least as powerful, effective and consistent (if not more so) than my forehand! Oscar's teachings have also helped me better control my first serve and (more crucially) has absolutely transformed my second serve into a confident and attacking kick serve, rather than just the "bunny" second serve I had at my disposal before. I've already been selected to play in the league team at my club a couple of times and can hardly believe the way I'm playing and the quality of player I'm beating or the compliments I'm getting from people who are totally amazed at the rate at which I've improved. Thank you Oscar! You've inspired me and as a result, my 5-year old daughter Rosie has also been introduced to the game (and loves it). One request. Any chance you could make an accompanying DVD to go with the book - my wife hates reading and the words are a bit small for Rosie!

I was initially disappointed as it looked like a novice's guide to tennis with instructions on the point scoring system, where to stand and serve, how high the net should be, etc, but after revisiting it and looking in more detail it does have some useful tips and insights. For example, Wegner at least knows about the windshield wiper forehand and the hook forehand (using the biceps and pecs as opposed to triceps and back muscles as demonstrated by Nadal and Gasquet for almost every shot) which only advanced tennis players know about.

He also talks about "the wrap finish" which is discouraged by other coaches, and he says it's ok to copy the pros. If you love tennis you will like reading this stuff but the book suffers from a identity crisis - I could condense the useful stuff into 10 pages, but those 10 pages could help your game.
