Clear(er) at last 12 Oct 2011
By Doc
This is a compilation of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, with tracks taken from various TV, radio and home recordings, (?).
There are so many Syd era titles that we would all still like to hear but until we get a 'Piper' total immersion set, this will do for me.
So, to the tracks: You have, (and sounding pretty bloody amazing).
1. Excerpt from Pow R Toc H, and 2. Astronomy Domine, both from BBC's Look of the Week. Truly, truly fantastic live PF in the studio. It's a shame that they cut Robert Robinson's, silky voiced "more of them hereafter" bit from the end of Pow R Toc H, I always loved that.

3. A slightly fuzzy sounding but absolutely lovely Top Gear version of Gnome, with audience participation on the 'hoorays'. Actually, as with some of the others, Syd's voice sounds so much more sincere on these versions that the LP ones.

The same goes for 4. Scarecrow, fuzzy sound but lovely nonetheless.

5. Set the controls is more clear and even with the DJ intro is great.

6. Matilda Mother, a bit more fuzzy sound but great performance, especially the guitar; heavily spaced.

7. Reaction in G, a very short excerpt with Tony Blackburn and a friend actually being quite funny (and no, I'm not on drugs).

8. Flaming, again fuzzy sound but Syd's voice sounds so sweet. Thought he was whispering in my ear.

9 & 10. Green Onions & Instrumental both from BBC's Tomorrow's World and nice and clear but a little odd without the visuals we're used to.

11. Vegetable Man, middling sound but still way better than all of the boots out there. Syd sings very clearly here and nice ambience.

12. Scream Thy Last Scream, (and this is the keeper) Syd singing and not Nick, (?) as on the proposed single version. I think I wet myself when I heard this. Quite good sound and all of the lyrics clear and sweet as a squirrel's nut and sung by our hero, (hooray).

13. Pow R Toc H, more fuzz but a great performance & last but by no means least...

14. The lovely Top Gear version of Jugband Blues with a very genuine and light vocal from Syd. I love this version, especially the shakey start, pure magic.

All of this is pure magic really and as I said, until we get total immersion versions of "Piper", (please, please, please) this will do me fine.

Great Live Recording 11 Oct 2011
This is a great live recording.
One reviewer is saying this is a bootleg.
John Peel did Radio One for the BBC and presented this show on September 30th 1971.
It has been bootleged over the years, but remember that because of different copyright laws the Japanese can release some awfully good titles that were boots, and/or unavailable.
And in many instances they can do a superior job to the often poorly recorded, and to many generations out of an original copy.
As for downloads what is the sound quality of the download?
Although Floyd can't police everything they are sticklers for unauthorized downloads.
And that goes back to the copyright infringement laws that depend on your part of the world.
Sure there are many unauthorized downloads out there that people download all the time, but Floyd is quite a powerful band, with quite a reach.
Does Floyd own the Rights to these shows?
It says they do on the disc.
I have also read that these are pirated?
Buy one and tell me if these are pirated.
This show has flawless sound quality with the exception of the last track "Blues" which clocks in at just under 5 minutes. This track is an excellent jam, but does have background hiss.
The rest of the show is superb, with crystal clear sound.
Great stuff. Buy it and disregard the boo hooers.
One final question that only Pink Floyd can answer.
Why keep re-releasing albums that everybody has heard in different box set formats, or individual releases?
Why not release a box set of this type of material?
Who owns the Publishing Rights?
Puzzling.

Culled from "Top Gear" BBC performances, this CD can also be found as a 2 CD package titled "Pink Floyd: BBC Archives 1967-1969". That edition combines the '67 and '68 to '69 CDs. Both discs are good although the sound quality doesn't match the 1970 or 1971 BBC performances. That said, the '67 through '69 performances are a great archive of the bands' early career and the transformation from the sparser sound of the psychedelic Syd Barrett era to the fuller sound and heavier guitar work of the David Gilmour Floyd. Disc 1 is all Syd while disc 2 features David. Enjoy.
