This is a compilation of Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, with tracks taken from various TV, radio and home recordings, (?).
There are so many Syd era titles that we would all still like to hear but until we get a 'Piper' total immersion set, this will do for me.
So, to the tracks: You have, (and sounding pretty bloody amazing).
1. Excerpt from Pow R Toc H, and 2. Astronomy Domine, both from BBC's Look of the Week. Truly, truly fantastic live PF in the studio. It's a shame that they cut Robert Robinson's, silky voiced "more of them hereafter" bit from the end of Pow R Toc H, I always loved that.
3. A slightly fuzzy sounding but absolutely lovely Top Gear version of Gnome, with audience participation on the 'hoorays'. Actually, as with some of the others, Syd's voice sounds so much more sincere on these versions that the LP ones.
The same goes for 4. Scarecrow, fuzzy sound but lovely nonetheless.
5. Set the controls is more clear and even with the DJ intro is great.
6. Matilda Mother, a bit more fuzzy sound but great performance, especially the guitar; heavily spaced.
7. Reaction in G, a very short excerpt with Tony Blackburn and a friend actually being quite funny (and no, I'm not on drugs).
8. Flaming, again fuzzy sound but Syd's voice sounds so sweet. Thought he was whispering in my ear.
9 & 10. Green Onions & Instrumental both from BBC's Tomorrow's World and nice and clear but a little odd without the visuals we're used to.
11. Vegetable Man, middling sound but still way better than all of the boots out there. Syd sings very clearly here and nice ambience.
12. Scream Thy Last Scream, (and this is the keeper) Syd singing and not Nick, (?) as on the proposed single version. I think I wet myself when I heard this. Quite good sound and all of the lyrics clear and sweet as a squirrel's nut and sung by our hero, (hooray).
13. Pow R Toc H, more fuzz but a great performance & last but by no means least...
14. The lovely Top Gear version of Jugband Blues with a very genuine and light vocal from Syd. I love this version, especially the shakey start, pure magic.
All of this is pure magic really and as I said, until we get total immersion versions of "Piper", (please, please, please) this will do me fine.
