Product Description

Product Description

This book is a collection of projects based around various microcontrollers from the PIC family. The reader is carefully guided through the book, from very simple to more complex projects in order to gradually build their knowledge about PIC microcontrollers and digital electronics in general. On completion of this book, the reader should be able to design and build their own projects and solve other practical problems in digital electronics.

Many books in this area are theory based and can tend toward being overly explanatory in their approach to the subject. Courses are moving towards being more practically oriented and this book provides the ideal companion to students completing projects with PIC microcontrollers.

About the Author

Hassan Parchizadeh is a principal lecturer at the University of Portsmouth. He has been lecturing for over 20 years and currently teaches a number of subjects including microcontrollers, power electronics and signal processing. He as also published two books on microcontrollers.

Dr. Branislav Vukanovic is a senior lecturer at the University of Portsmouth, previously he was a lecturer and the University of Derby and a research fellow at the University of Sheffield. He teaches in the areas of digital electronics, microprocessors and digital signal processing. He has published a significant number of papers in his fields.

This book gets straight to the point in Plain English. It starts by teaching the rudiments of assembler in 6 pages and of C in 10 pages, all done by page 27. It then gives clear explanations of MPLAB, simulator and stimulus.

Examples with complete tested programs go from flashing an LED to LCD control, serial interfacing, A/D, stepper and DC motor control, ultrasonic range finder, function generator and digital filtering. They use PIC16 with both assembler and C. Later in the book they use only PIC18 and C. They use the Hi-Tech C compiler (free student version)

Lots of pictures of screens, with schematics and photos of stripboard circuits.

Complaints? They sometimes get into a muddle with part numbers of chips, giving "16F27A" (non-existent) instead of 16F627A, and they don't cover keypad/keyboards/ascii or programmers, but plenty of other books do.

Still a great book, readable and short (at 188 pages).

Good iniciation book 15 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a straightforward book with no garbage and unnecessary extension. It is very well written, and has the novice in PIC microcontrollers in mind, preferably with some academic background.

The book addresses several practical projects, with increasing degree of difficulty, supported with integral code listings in assembly and C language. They are also accompanied with printed circuit board layouts and clear explanations. The layouts are traced with the aid of EAGLE, a PCB layout editor which has a freeware light edition that can be downloaded from the manufacturer's web site and is sufficient to do the job.

As a matter of fact, I tried the C code with SourceBoost C compiler, and after some modifications to the listings in order to adapt the code to compiler idiosyncrasies, all worked well almost first time. I don't know many books with the same neatness and quality of code.

I only can praise this book and recommend it to anyone who has some electronic design experience and wishes to begin to work with PIC microcontrollers.

Having programmed in PIC assembler for several projects, I needed to go higher level due to increased code complexity. This book showed me clearly how to approach PIC programming in C. With direct comparisons of assembler and C it gave a super insight on how C can improve code generation but also shows the limitations of this approach in certain critical cases (where good old assembler can't be beat). The examples start off quite easy but progress to challenging subjects such as function generating and digital filtering. A well written book.
