This DVD/HDD recorder was purchased to replace my ageing VCR. Purchased from Argos for £180 (discount of £10 so really £170) which I think is a good price for a DVD recorder with a HDD. The recorder does everything stated in the spec. The time buffer is useful and I was able to watch a prerecorded program whilst recording a live program at the same time. This recorder is not multi region, however after a bit a googling I was able to find a hack to convert to multi-region just by typing a few numbers on the remote followed by opening/closing the DVD tray. Just took several seconds.

Just a few annoying bits as follows.

    1. When turning on from Standby it takes a long 17 seconds to turn on. This means that if you suddenly see something you urgently want to record then you'll have to wait an agonising 17 secs just for the thing to warm up.

    2. The buttons on the remote (esp. numbers) are very small (like pin heads) and are spaced too close together and have a crap feel. Took a lot of thumbling to set the time. Feels a bit cheap and nasty. Just hope it lasts as long as the recorder.

    3. When recorder is recording in the Timer mode you cannot view from the TV channel allocated for the recorder. This means you cannot check to see if you are recording the correct channel and there is no useful information on the display panel.

    4. When recording a very bright red LED light comes on and some people may find distracting.

    5. When using the on screen menu I found the information displayed to be very small (small characters and numbers). I consider myself to have 20/20 vision but still found the on screen information challenging to read. However my TV screen is only 29 inches (4:3 format) and not the new widescreen 42 inches out there.

The above bits you can live with and get used too (not sure about the remote) but are factors you should consider and compare to other recorders before buying.

Got this product as we have virgin cable and wanted something that could record onto a hard disc, which pretty much rules out everything with a built in freeview tuner.

Had the product set up in minutes, plug in the scart from the digi box and the other to the TV and thats it!

The recording buffer which automatically records whatever you're watching is fantastic. Watched a DVD and found that the hard disc had recorded what was on the digi box which was great. Easy to rewind and pause live TV.

Fully recommended. Would get 5 stars if I could work out how to set the default channel to the decoder scart!

    Fantastic.

This recorder is a great machine. It is silent in use (unlike other DVD HD recorders) and easy to use.

Contrary to other reviews, I found the unit very easy to set up. Just follow the 'Quick set up guide' and you'll be up and running in about 10 mins. This is the time taken to scan for all the available channels.

The hand control is ok to use but can be a little fiddly as it has small numeric keys. I found it responsive to use with no delays between pressing the button and the recorder responding.

The on screen menus are easy to follow and logical.

The styling is nice and it looks sleek in black and silver. The power on light is a dim blue LED so nothing gaudy.

My only gripes which mean that it does not get 5/5 are:

It has a slow start up time so when you press the on button, there is a delay of about 20 seconds until you can start to watch anything or set the timer.

When you set it to record a DVD (not onto the Hard Disc) the unit powers on to record at the set time and only records when it has warmed up, about 20 seconds after the start time, therefore missing the first 20 seconds which is irritating. This does not happen when recording to the HD.

There is a warning in the manual that it will not record copyright material but I have not come accross this issue yet.
