Philips Fidelio DS8500
PureDigital
PureDigital Processing for Unsurpassed Fidelity

Unlike traditional iPod docks, the DS8500 processes sound digitally. The result is far clearer audio performance. Using PureDigital, the DS8500 collects the digital output of your iPod or iPhone and processes it at each stage of the circuit, resulting in a much higher signal-to-noise ratio. This allows the speaker to reproduce the audio files on your mobile device with greater clarity and fidelity.

Optimized Drivers Add Precision

If a speaker's drivers aren't optimized to match its acoustic requirements, it will produce distorted sound. Fortunately, the DS8500's drivers have been fine-tuned to provide clear performance at all frequencies. High tones are precise and distinct, while low tones come out deep and tight. Bass reproduction is particularly rich: the mid- and low-range drivers have been specially engineered to create crisp, penetrating sound reproduction.

Curved Design Creates an Ideal Acoustic Environment

Chic and elegant, the DS8500's curved design is not only an eye catcher, it's also an effective structure for acoustics. The concave architecture of the speaker creates an ideal acoustic environment for your music: It dramatically reduces distortion and resonance, resulting in more precise and natural sound.

Proximity Sensor and Remote Control for Convenient Operation

The speaker also features an intuitive backlit control panel, which is activated using a proximity sensor. When your hand moves close to the speaker, the display illuminates and allows you to operate it. Walk away, and the light dims to allot more power to music playback. For added convenience, an easy-to-use remote control is included.

Free Fidelio App Unlocks Additional Features

If you own an iPod touch or an iPhone, you can unlock even more features for your speaker using the complementary Fidelio app. This exclusive app allows you to navigate your music collection more easily and control sound settings. It also gives you access to a full five-band equalizer, which lets you fine-tune your speaker to suit your acoustic preferences. You can even use the app to set customized music alarms, so you'll wake up to your favorite music every morning.

Dock Any iPhone or iPod, Even in Its Case

The speaker's spring-loaded docking port accommodates any iPhone or iPod, without special adapters. What's more, it works even when most protective cases are on--just dock your iPhone or iPod as is for fuss-free enjoyment of your music.

Compatible with Most iPods and iPhones
Compatible with Most iPods and iPhones

The DS8500 is compatible with all iPod products with a 30-pin connector (except iPod shuffle)--this includes the newest iPod nano and touch models; also compatible with iPhone, iPhone 3G and 3GS, and iPhone 4.

I guess I was really impressed by so many positive reviews, and for such price it seemed a must have gadget.
Well, it looks pretty nice. It's not as bulky as the Zeppelin and its design is nicer than JBLs and Boses. The remote control makes everything simpler, but you need to read the instructions as it's not that intuitive, but it's no big deal.
The big problem is when you're streaming music, in other words, using last.fm, spotify and others. Apparently, there's some conflict between my iPhone 3GS and the speaker that makes it go mental after 20 seconds, the song seems to jump (like a good old scratched CD) and after that my new Fidelio seems to disconnect my phone. My first impression was that I got sent a faulty product, but after reading some other reviews on Apple's website, I found other out that people were experiencing the same.
It's a pity, because it's a sort of thing you take for granted. In other words, Philips could've been more cautious and tested it better before launching it.

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I was quite impressed with the design of this speaker. It's a good size (ie. not too big) and looks very modern and stylish - lots of smooth curves. It feels solid and not flimsy, which is always a good sign. It's certainly better looking than some of the more premium models out there.

I tried the speaker with both an iPod Nano and iPhone 4. Both worked fine without and problems. The docking connector is a nice design and doesn't require the 'device adapters' that most other speakers like the Bose needs - just slip your iPod in, and it's ready to use.

Sound quality is good - it's not as good as the Bose Sound-Dock, but that's over twice as expensive. Bass response is impressive, much better than I expected and treble is clear.

The remote control is easy to use and controls standard functions such as play/pause/switch off/go forward one track, etc. It doesn't give you the ability to nagivate through albums or playlists, but I've always thought this to be pointless in a remote control, as you'd need to be near the speaker to see the display!

The speaker itself only has volume buttons, everything else is controlled by the remote or the iPod itself. One annoying thing is that the speaker uses the same volume as your iPod - therefore if you've been listening to it loudly using headphones then it's going to be very load if you don't reduce the speaker volume before hitting the play button! Note that other devices, such as the Bose, have an independent speaker control, so they don't have this problem.

There is an free application that you can download for the more advanced iPods/iPhones, but this isn't actually needed. The app gives you more control over bass/treble, which is a nice touch but I was able to live without it when using an iPod Nano.

I can't think of any other speakers that are even comparable in this price range. Recommended.

    Outstanding sound 30 Oct 2010
    By uumode
    Normally I wouldn't consider a Philips, I'm sure most others wouldn't, preferring B&W/Bose/JBL

I compared it side by side with a B&W Zepplelin, B&W Zepplelin Mini, Bose Sounddock II, iHome IP1E, and I was utterly astounded to how good this was. The bass performance was incredible and seemingly matched the large Zepplelin for low frequency, but walked all over it for control. Zepplelin was loose, woolly, with a vague duff duff, whereas the DS8500 had definition. Early in the audition I discounted the Zepplelin Mini and iHome IP1E - they didn't come close, so was comparing mainly with the other two.

The Sounddock II didn't have enough volume and everything sounded a tad weaker than the Philips. The Philips sounded overall better than the Zepplelin - I personally didn't like the ill defined bass of the B&W which was muffled in comparison with the Philips. EDIT: //after listening to the DS8500 more and listening to the same tracks on the BOSE Sounddock II, the BOSE appears to have less control in the bass department and less guts, but has more midrange than the DS8500 where vocals can sound a bit thin, which is its weakest point IMHO. Treble from the DS8500 I'd say is analytical - more clinical, where the BOSE is more 'musical' and sweet. BOSE and DS8500 are more equal than others (probably because the Philips is gunning for it). DS8500 and BOSE Sounddock II should be on your shopping list. DS8500 for rock, loud volumes and bass. BOSE for acoustics, classic, vocals. Oddly the DS8500 sounds IMHO much better than the Sounddock II with more detail, but the sonic difference is not so great with the battery powered version of the Sounddock @£350 which altogether sounds far superior to the non battery powered version @£250?//

The second surprise after the sound was the price tag!!! - give this unit an audition.

I bought it, took it home and compared with my bedroom Yamaha PDX50, which it walked over. Then compared it with my Audioengine A5 stand mounted speakers and the SD8500 had more bass and thump!? (ok I acknowledge the DS8500 must use some digital trickery, but grand piano and bass string renditions sound more realistic on the DS8500). Otherwise the Audioengines sound better for soundstaging, clarity and detail - afterall they are full blown box speakers.

If you read the tech spec on the Philips site this unit uses pure digital sound output from the iPod, and not analogue... perhaps that is the recipe.
