Format: Paperback
It's hard to find good old traditional ghost stories in the Victorian vein. This is in part due to the advent of the Hollywood splatter movie where every horror has to be made explicit because of an audience unable to engage their imaginations!
Simon Marsden seems to have bridge that gap in this, and many of his other books. The book consists of eerie photos of castles, old country houses, lakes, cairns etc all interspearsed with the few paragraphs relaying the supernatural story behind the structure. This format conveniently lends itself to casual 'dipping
into' the contents, preferably before retiring to ones bed!
Primarily I'd say this book, and the 'Haunted Realm' before it, is a collection of beautiful photographs (?infrared film?)onto which has been tagged the supernatural tale-retold superbly, in Marsdens own words. It isn't a book about ghosts or the supernatural but a romantic vision for people who enjoy a bit of escapism, and despite it's potentially chilling content, I often re-read it and get a feeling of mysterious warmth rather than terror.
Wonderful books and I am going to buy all of his works and would reccommend you do too!

I love Simon Marsden's work and this book of photographs and stories is no exception. Many of the houses/castles are from the Republic of Ireland, although Mr Marsden refers to it as "Southern Ireland", which is inaccurate. As he has mentioned before, the Celtic Fringe has a particular fascination with the supernatural and there are numerous instances of haunted houses and castles in Ireland, Scotland and Wales. A beautiful book, so 5 stars.

The late Sir Simon Marsden has been a photographic hero of mine since the early 1980's with his trademark Infra Red images of crumbling castles, country houses, churches & graveyards. This book, bought 2nd hand here for 1p, and why I admire/d him so much. His photographs are timeless, while looking antique, and beautiful, despite the dereliction.

There's no such thing as a bad Simon Marsden book. I treasure his photographs and his ability to see the mystical and mysterious. He had a great eye and the gift of imagination. I never get tired of looking through his books!!!!!!!

The most incredible pictures and stories. I get Sir Simon Marsden's calendar every year. If you have any tiny interest in ghosts, castles, legends, Europe, documented experiences pick up his books. You will be mesmerized.
