5.0 out of 5 stars Survival is the word! 27 Aug 2011
To call this book essential is no overstatement!
The range of advice and tips that this book contains is very wide, from writing assignments to where to sit in the staffroom, and is crowd-sourced from NQTs and teachers from all over to give varied and honest views directly from "the trenches".

The writing style is fairly conversational and informal, and the fact that it is split into small chunks, grouped by theme means that it's easy to benefit from the advice, quickly - unlike certain other "companions to school experience", which may be more readily recommended by universities, but make the very act of getting to the advice a struggle in itself!

With that in mind, I can't recommend this book highly enough. I would rate this as essential reading for any pgce student and recommend that you read through it before each of your placements, and give yourself a head-start!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for starting a PGCE 19 July 2012

This book is amazing! I am due to start a PGCE this September and was a little unsure what to expect, what will be expected of me and I just wanted some tips before I start the course.
The book is truly fantastic and it tells you everything you need to know about the PGCE including what to expect on your first day!! There are lots of references to good books and also loads of website links to help with lesson plans etc.
The book is written by someone who has recently done a PGCE so it comes from a student's point of view as well as having additional authors who are experienced!!
I think this book will be my bible for the coming year....can't wait to start! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for those starting, or on a PGCE course 19 July 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I have spent the last couple of months feeling incredibly anxious about my PGCE starting in September. I am now kicking myself that I didn't buy this book sooner! Everything I felt uncertain about, is explained in this book. It has calmed me down massively and even although I am still very nervous, I feel I've had a lot of questions answered about the course and most importantly, how to survive it! It is very up to date, and Tim Handley obviously knows exactly how new Teacher Trainees will be feeling.
The book is written concisely and is nice and easy just to flick through every now and again, which I find very useful.
I'd recommend this for anyone starting, or currently on a PGCE course- it will really start to put your mind at rest if you, like me, are feeling a little shaky about it all. Absolutely love it :D
