4.0 out of 5 stars Merry Christmas & A Vogel New Year 7 July 2010
The third installment in Fred Vogel's pseudo-snuff horror is technically the best of the trilogy. The acting has improved a considerable amount from the August predecessor Mordum and the overall look of the images have a more polished finish, although it has still been captured on a hand-held camera. There's no storyline again, as with the other two flicks, the scenes jump-cut from; mutilation; to a punk concert; to rampant violence; to a supermarket; to rape and so forth - it's like watching someone's poorly constructed holiday moments but the two people here just happen to be psychopaths on a vacation from reality.

Unlike Mordum, Vogel is ever-present in Penance and the female lead is not annoying - she's quite impressive at times and so is he. The make-up and special effects are better this time around too but the acts of depravity, in my opinion, are not as sick and disturbing as Mordum or the original for that matter; or, maybe i've just watched too many Toetag Pictures and finally desensitized myself to the abhorrant images on offer.

Fred Vogel's idea of wishing someone a Merry Christmas will upset most viewers but, for me, the following scene when he fingers the cleft of a womens throat recently slit was the most gruesome and cringeworthy slice of gore throughout the duration of this sick flick - simply because it looked so real. Also, when Fred upsets his girlfriend, his idea of comforting her was so appalling i couldn't workout if i was more shocked about his nurturing techniques or the grim discovery that traumatized the poor wench in the first place.

For the third flick in the August nightmare i was expecting a bit more imagination than what was shown.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nasty as hell 3 Jun 2013
This film really does go beyond what normal horror fans might expect, the gore effects are well done, it is a sickening ride through the life of two serial killers who film everything they do. This has got to be one of the sickest films I've ever seen, I mean, that's not meant to be a recomendtion, there's not much of a story but if it's sick gore your looking for....then take a look at this.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good less horrible film from the underground 23 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase
Not too less horrible as it still latches on with thoses moments of sheer hellish scenes that are so wrong I wonder if they should even be legal to show on a dvd disc ? this is the third installment from the august underground films, unlike the second one this has much less shock to the shock factor, not as much gross out scenes and not as sick!
Penance is only a little bit sicker than the first installment.
Mordum is defiantly still the sickest and most damn wrong movie I've ever seen but Penance is still just as good as Mordum but less sick! Penance is very much alike the first film but the first film got a bit boring within an hour which is a shame as the august underground movies are very good but I think any real lover of horror needs to ad these freak out films to the collection.

buy all three and view mordum at your own risk!
the first film and penance aint too bad so dw about being to faint to watch them ones.
