Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I have a machine which is upto date but has been slow recently. I have Kaspersky AV on it and have run several full scans but nothing was found. I put Spyware Dr. on as a matter of curiosity really to see if it could find anything bad. I loaded the CD and it said a newer version was available online so I followed the instructions and it loaded with no problems and then I registered it. During loading it warned me that it may conflict with my Kaspersky but I ignored this (did a system backup first though) and went on with the set up. Once installed I did a full scan and low and behold it found 76 problems including 6 high risk ones, various cookies, key loggers and general ad pop ups. I ran the fix and did a reboot and the machine booted quite quickly and it now seems more responsive, so all good so far. The only problem I seem to have with it is that Windows 7 (64bit) keeps telling me I have no anti virus software installed. I ran Kaspersky which still seems to be alive and well and it ran fine and is still running in the background. I have checked my main software suites and they all load as before but a bit faster so it looks as though this has done the job. However, the cross on the Windows problem flag saying I have no AV installed is a bit worrying so I emailed PC Tools about it. They came back saying it was a known registry error that is created when Spyware Dr and Kaspersky exist together and Windows is the problem (where have we heard that before. Being a programmer I have a few harmless test viruses so put the CD into the drive and Kaspersky immediately alerted me to their existance and not to load the disk. This way I knew Kaspersky was alive and well and Spyware Dr also saw the spyware test file I have. I see other users have had a few problems with conflicts while others have not. Overall I can recommend this software but please do a system back up before loading it with another makers antinvirus on the system going by the other reviews here. I have yest to test it with my laptop that has Norton on it and will see how it fairs with that. I would have given 5 stars except for this incompatibility issue, but you are warned about a possible issues when loading, it would be better for PC Tools to solve these issues before releasing software but no software is ever complete, it is always work in progress as we know with Windows.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is review of PC Tools Spyware Doctore 2011.

NOTE This product does not include AntiVirus to guard against malicious threats or AntiSpam, but may be used to remove rootkits etc.

I was impressed with the ease of installation and the effectiveness of this product. I had a PC with a whole bunch of malware on that AVG(Freeware) and Avast(free version) was unable to clean up. Once installed, Spyware Doctor hunted down the problem and removed it. PC is now clean and I dodn't have to go through the re-installing windows route.

Scanning the system is a little slower than with some other products, but maybe that is because it is doing a good job.

Impressed.

I've used an older version of Spyware Doctor for 2 years, running it alongside Norton 360 with its antivirus function deactivated (to prevent interference with Norton's antivirus, which I've left fully functional). In my earliest experience with Spyware Doctor, I found it could detect and remove certain infections Norton either overlooked or else found but couldn't get rid of. All was bliss - until my subscription came up for renewal September 30, 2010 and I downloaded the latest release of Spyware Doctor.

Spyware Doctor 2011 is nothing short of a disaster.

I first installed it under Windows Vista on a 64-bit Hewlett Packard desktop that has had a history of sporadic malfunctions of Explorer (the directory tree examiner, not to be confused with Internet Explorer). The Spyware Doctor 2011 installation hijacked my Internet Explorer dummy start page (about:blank) in an attempt to sign me up for "Browser Defender", another PC Tools product. Since that's a minor, fixable irritation, I didn't attribute the woes that ensued to Spyware Doctor's actions, but following the installation, both Explorer and Internet Explorer quit working. I assumed the notoriously unstable Vista was at fault and decided this was a good time to upgrade to Windows 7.

Now, 30 Euros poorer, I've learned to my chagrin that Spyware Doctor 2011 corrupts the normally stable Windows 7, too! It renders both Explorer and Internet Explorer useless and causes a pandemic of breakdowns in all sorts of basic operations. Fortunately, software removal via Control Panel was left intact, and using it to exorcise the blighted Spyware Doctor 2011 and its inner demons magically brought the many frozen functions back to life again.

A grizzled software veteran, I'm left to speculate over what sort of mess the now uninstalled critter left in its wake. This being a freshly-hatched system, I'm going to play it safe and reinstall Windows 7 from scratch.

The last I heard, PC Tools had earned a kind of badge of respectability through being acquired by Symantec, a PC security name most of us take seriously. But now I'm reading that I'm not the only one who's found Spyware Doctor's recent releases to be dangerous garbage.

If you don't think your PC would be fun on hallucinogenic drugs, don't install Spyware Doctor on it!
