Product Description

Review

"A good solid basis on which to learn about In service testing. This book gives you the basics of the subject, including legislation as well as actual testing. [.] All in all a handy reference book for quick check backs and decent refresher quiz on relevant questions." AMAZON.CO.UK READER REVIEW (review of previous edition)

Product Description

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require any electrical system to be constructed, maintained and used in such a manner as to prevent danger. This means that inspection and testing of systems, including portable appliances, is needed in order to determine if maintenance is required.

This book explains in clear language what needs to be done and includes expert advice on legislation as well as actual testing. The book contains an appendix providing the electrical fundamentals needed by non-specialists and also has sample questions (with answers) for the C&G 2377 exam that anyone who conducts this work is required to take by law.

It is an affordable and handy reference for electricians who administer PAT. It is also an ideal refresher and revision guide for the non-specialist, such as maintenance staff, caretakers and charity shop volunteers who carry out these tasks part-time, alongside their many other duties.

Brian Scaddan, I Eng, MIET, is a consultant for and an Honorary Member of City & Guilds. He has over 35 years' experience in Further Education and training. He is Director of Brian Scaddan Associates Ltd, an approved City and Guilds and NICEIC training centre offering courses on all aspects of Electrical Installation Contracting including the C&G 2377 series. He is also a leading author of books on electrical installation.

* Fully up-to-date with the 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations, the 2008 Code of Practice and the C&G 2377-11 and -12 syllabus
* Provides all the necessary information on PAT in a user-friendly manner
* Expert advice from an engineering training consultant, supported with colour diagrams, examples and tables

i bought this along with the IEE code of practice for in service inspection and testing of electrical equipment, in preparation for the c&g2377 exam. (i have worked in industry for many years as a domestic appliance engineer for bosch siemens and electrolux and have just got a job PAT testing for a local college - hence why i am sitting the exam)i think the main problem of the book is it tries to be a bit of everything, without focusing specifically on key areas. the book constantly makes reference to the code of practice (which you will need so save your money and just buy that instead) and is not comprehensive enough to even answer all the example questions in the back of the book. two key points 1)the book makes no reference as far as i recall to the labelling of appliances tested. 2) on the subject of touch current, the author makes the excuse 'the exact method of conducing this test is not at all clear in the code of practice, and as it is quite unusual to perform such a test in normal circumstances it has been omitted from this volume'(page36). i confess the reference to protective conductor/touch current measuremnt in the code of practice isn't very clear, however i understood it after reading it through a couple of times! (it's simply refering to what used to be known as earth leakage current) Not at all what i would expect from a chief examiner and honary member of the city & guilds who runs pat testing courses!

Dated 31 July 2007
Format:Paperback
The format of this book is very much as a classroom text book. It is of very limited use as a guide or for information outside a classroom with a tutor to expand on the theory and practice. To be fair that is basically its intended market. But as a reference book or for self tuition it is pretty hopeless as are many of these in this series. Better to buy the IEE guide as a reference book.

If you have a copy of The IEE code of practice for In-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment (3rd edition), this book is completely useless, there is very little or nothing new discuseed that is not in the book above, save your money, if you do want a book on PAT testing, get the IEE code of practice, it's all you'll need!

Good as an introduction
Clear and concise but doesn't go into enough detail for anyone other than an absolute beginner.
