Product Description

SYNOPSIS: One of the most emotional film experiences of any era, Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1928 The Passion of Joan of Arc is a miracle of the cinema, an enigmatic and profoundly moving work that merges the worlds of the viewer and of saintly Joan herself into one shared experience of hushed delirium.

Dreyer's film charts the final days of Joan of Arc as she undergoes the degradation that accompanies her trial for charges of heresy - through her imprisonment and execution at the stake.

The portrayal of Joan by Renée Maria Falconetti is frequently heralded as the all-time finest performance in the history of film, and Dreyer's unusual and virtuosic method, in seeming to render the very soul of his actress, vaulted the director decisively into the ranks of the art form's supreme geniuses.

The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present The Passion of Joan of Arc in its worldwide Blu-ray première, in an exclusive new restoration, presented in both 20fps and 24fps playback speeds, and featuring Dreyer's own original Danish-language intertitles, available in THREE formats-Blu-ray, DVD, and Ltd Edition Dual Format (DVD & Blu-ray) SteelBook editions.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
  • Exclusively restored high-definition master presented in the film's original aspect ratio, in 1080p on the Blu-ray
  • Presented in both 20fps and 24fps playback speeds
  • Optional audio tracks: a piano score performed by Japanese silent film composer Mie Yanashita (for the 20fps option), and a radical accompaniment by esteemed American avant-garde musician Loren Connors (for the 24fps option)
  • Newly translated optional English subtitles for Dreyer's original Danish intertitles
  • The complete "Lo Duca" version of the film - the version (featuring an alternate edit and soundtrack) that circulated in France and around the world for decades before the rediscovery of Dreyer's "director's cut"
  • Extended illustrated booklet featuring the words of Dreyer, rare archival imagery, and more
  • Further details to be announced nearer the release date!

5.0 out of 5 stars Passion of Joan of Arc. 27 Dec 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
An extraordinary film by any measure, fierce, dreadful and yet beautiful. The direction was masterful, and the reputation of the film fully deserved. Falconetti's performance is perhaps the greatest ever captured on film, and remains moving to this day. A film everyone should see.

This is IMO the best film ever made. I don't know how often I have seen it but every time I watch it I go into a trance. I just got the film on Blu Ray and wanted to check the quality. Well, I got sucked into the film and could not stop. Before I knew it I had watched the whole thing and while I'm writing this it is running again on the screen in front of me.

The face of Maria Falconetti is burned into my soul. She probably never knew that she was acting in (one of) the best film of all time and that she would never ever be forgotten for just this single film role. This might just be the best acting in a film ever. The same actually goes for most of the actors. They are all so authentic.

One of the things I love about this film is the symbolism. Here we have one of Dreyers favorite motives, the wheel, symbolizing time, eternity and life. We see it also quite often used in Vampyr (one of Dreyers best film). And there is more symbolism here, like the lamb (as the lamb of God, the sacrificial lamb or Jesus), the child sucking a mothers breast (God's greace) and so on.

Dreyer always wanted to make a film about Jesus but never got around to do it, even though he had the finance to write the script. To me The Passion of Joan of Arc is a Jesus film. Joan of Arc is one of the best Christ figures in cinema history. There are scenes in this film that are lifted straight from the New Testament, like the scene when the guards mob her, put a crown on her head and call her the daughter of God. And then there is the sacrifice and the victory in death, when the onlookers rise up and protest, believing her to be a saint.

One can also read this film from a feminist or even gay perspective since what seams to threatens the church most is the fact that she wears mans clothes.

By DJG
Format:Blu-ray
I had never before seen this world renowned silent film masterpiece until I watched this beautiful Bluray edition by Eureka Masters of Cinema series.Believe me,it makes most films of today pale in comparison. When I say it is a trip back in time,I don't mean 1927,the year it was released.I mean 15th century France.Joan's face as played by Falconetti is unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive package 1 Mar 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is more than just a video, being a comprehensive package of book and two dvds of different versions of this classic film, showing at different speeds and with different options on soundtrack. The film is fascinating, not at all what one expects of silent classics, and although I bought it due to an interest in Artaud who plays one of the young monks there is much else to enjoy. The array of faces of the judges is wonderful - obviously with a silent film the look of the actors is really important. Watching it requires concentration - I actually watched it in two parts - but repays the attention. A great film and a really good modern presentation.

This film fully warrants its reputation as one of leading films made - the performance of Joan is especially moving. I watched this film with a small group of friends and we all found it a most profound and moving experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars dvd or blu ray? 7 Jan 2013
By lucas

I guess that probably everybody who is interested in ordering this film knows that this is one of the sacred masterpieces of cinema. It would be redundant to write about the film so I will focus on the physical product itself.

This review is about the dvd box set which, in my opinion, is better than the bluray edition. I first wrote a review about the blu ray box set but realized that
I should actually write a review about the dvd box set.

I can't write a review about both boxes because
Amazon reviews team, in their infinite lack of wisdom, consider the dvd and the blu ray box set to be the very same product and only one review per product is allowed...

I first ordered the dvd only box set. It was just after I had ordered it that I found out about the box set with blu ray and dvd.
So I ordered it and was going to return the dvd box set but I changed my mind. I kept the box set with dvds only and
returned the box set with blu ray and dvds.

I have two reasons for that:
1. The difference on image quality between the blu ray disc and the dvd is minimal and the contents are the same.
2. The package of the dvd is more functional. The blu ray disc and the two dvds come in a metal case that is very nice but the discs and the booklet are
just too tight in the cardboard cover and it is difficult to take them out. Obviously, it is something that I will do only two or three times but
I find it rather silly that I have to spend time trying to take the metal box out of the cardboard case.

Discs and booklet, on the other hand, come out easily from the dvd only box set. Besides, the whole thing is a little bigger what makes for larger photos in the book.
