Product Description

ATTENTION, CITIZEN JEROME-G. THIS IS YOUR FRIEND THE COMPUTER.

Jerome-G had a good job at the Threat Obfuscation Department in The Computer's underground city of Alpha Complex. He invented false threats to cover up true dangers. It made perfect sense, once he understood The Computer's idea of "true" is entirely false.

INTERNAL SECURITY CONSIDERS YOU A CITIZEN OF INTEREST.

Suddenly Jerome's fake menaces are turning real. Rogue robots are conspiring for independence. There's a pirate ship in the transport tubes. And the real-est threat is the powerful executive Ellister-V, who means to dispose of Jerome permanently.

WELCOME TO THE TROUBLESHOOTERS!

To evade a fatal reassignment as reactor shielding, Jerome volunteers for The Computer's elite service unit. Troubleshooters heroically defend Alpha Complex from traitors. Too bad Troubleshooters are often traitors themselves.

YOUR FIRST MISSION: FIND A LOST PAIR OF GLASSES.

If Jerome's teammates knew the equipment they seek is right in his pocket, they'd kill him. His experimental Augmented Reality goggles reveal the truth behind everything -- and he's more confused than ever.

YOU ARE IN ERROR. NO ONE IS SCREAMING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

Reality Optional - A PARANOIA novel by Gareth Hanrahan
(62,000 words - about 250 Kindle pages)

PARANOIA
Light-hearted stories of backstabbing, treachery, and Bouncy Bubble Beverage. Based on the bestselling roleplaying game of fear and ignorance in a darkly satirical future, official PARANOIA novels are now available as ebooks from Ultraviolet Books -- and they’re even for your security clearance.

If you prefer novels about Napoleon's invasion of Russia and the nature of power, history, and historiography -- well, have you tried War and Peace? That's a very nice book. But if you like Philip K. Dick and think The Office needs more firefights (and really, who doesn't?), your friend The Computer requires you to enjoy PARANOIA.

PARANOIA NOVELS ARE FUN. OTHER NOVELS ARE NOT FUN. READ PARANOIA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, dark and keep-your-laser-handy 6 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Gareth Hanrahan's first novel is a slice of old-school 80s paranoia brought screaming into the 2010s like a clone freshly ejected from its tube of nutrient goo. The action ranges from conspiracy theories so twisted they may throttle you to breathtaking flat-out action, sometimes on the same page, and there's a particular sequence of pirates versus warbots that's gloriously nuts.

The plotting is labyrinthine--I mean that in a good way--and the writing is intelligent and accomplished, layering levels of humour and wordplay on top of storytelling that cracks along at a wonderful pace, carrying you with it. This is a clever book, and again I mean that in a good way.

Whether you're new to the glories of Alpha Complex or the Computer has been your friend for decades, Reality Optional will throw you into a world that teeters between surreal and horrific, show you things you always suspected might be true but didn't dare to think about too hard, and will leave you with the taste of Bouncy Bubble Beverage on your tongue. In the world of Alpha Complex where everything is synthetic and nothing is as it seems, this is the real deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars bladerunner meets red dwarf, blackly brilliant 15 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'd never heard of Paranoia, but I got this on a friend's recommendation and read it in one sitting. Then I read it again and tried to stop laughing so hard tea shot out my nose. This is very witty and amazingly paranoid, but it does a great job of making mass paranoia credible. It has wit, sarcasam, pirates and conspiracy theories what more could you ask for?

4.0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud 3 July 2012

I have a vague recollection of Paranoia the role playing game but it's not something I ever got into, nor is it anything you need to trouble yourself with in order to enjoy this book.

The frustrated interactions our hero has with the myriad bureaucracies, computers, secret societies, hell-bent assassins and simple citizens as he tries to peel the layers to find the ultimate conspiracy are often genuinely hilarious.

If I had a complaint, and I do, it's that by the end of the book my brain was pickled keeping track of it all and sometimes the author drives home his point one time too many. That aside it was a heck of a fun read and I'll be dipping my toe into this strange society again in the future.
