5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! 26 Feb 2013

The two reviews above/below completely sum-up this amazing, genuine, Panasonic multi-region Blu-ray/DVD player.

Having started with a top-end Toshiba HD player when the whole Blu-ray/HD thing emerged, together with a top-end Denon multi-region DVD player, this is now the third Blu-player I have owned and, irrespective of the cost, this is by far and away the BEST player I have ever owned of all types.

Structurally, it is slim, light, and SO, SO easy to set-up in every possible aspect - it was playing my first zone A Blu-ray disc in 10 minutes of the player arriving. In comparison to my old Pioneer Blu-ray player, that cost 3 times as much, it is SO fast and user-friendly to use. It boots-up in a few seconds -yes, seconds! - and discs start to play almost immediately. The remote control is mega-simple to use and switching regions is EASY and done when the player is switched-off: you simply press the appropriate "region number", then press "on", and it plays immediately. There's NO faffing around waiting for the machine to load the disc with messages like "reading disc" etc. It is amazingly hassle-free and, to reiterate, very fast.

Importantly, the picture and sound quality easily match my previous expensive Pioneer player and for the cost, and for anyone who wants to play Blu-ray zone A (USA) discs as I do - (eg. Criterion Collection Blu-ray discs) - this player is a godsend.

I cannot recommend this player highly enough and the packaging and delivery were exemplary.

Enjoy!

I found the player easy to set up and it works great. However I have a Panasonic TV and DVD recorder and the remote for the Blu Ray player also controls the TV and DVD recorder. Fine to turn on the TV at the same time (in fact helpful) but not the DVD recorder. Worse, when I turned on the DVD recorder with its remote, I found that the Blu Ray player turned on as well.
So the Blu Ray player has gone back (and five starts to Amazon for agreeing to take it back) and I have purchased a Sony Blu Ray player instead.
It may be that more technically minded people will be able to stop the interference from happening but not me.

This multi-region bluray player has proved to be a disappointing purchase, as the power has failed completely after minimal usage, though unfortunately that limited usage was spread over more than a year, so I suspect I have no warranty cover. I have emailed amazon customer services re this today.

I should also highlight that this is the only one of many Panasonic AV products which I have had any problem with, over 30 years of buying various TVs, VHS/dvd, and now bluray players. Still by far the most reliable brand.

This is my second multi-region bluray player, the other is a BD75, which has been used several times a week for an even longer duration as the failed BD87.

The problem appears to be the power supply, which was a concern from the moment I opened the box. It has a hard-wired power cable, with a US/Canadian moulded 2-flat-pin plug, with a small UK adapter plug provided. This is not what was (& still is) advertised, it was supposed to be the typical "figure of 8" socket, with both EU & UK power cables. The model I received was manufactured solely for the US/Canadian market, and also contains only their warranty document, hence my suspicion that I may not be covered, even if the time period has not expired.

The unit also does not have a typical LED display panel.....but as it's no longer working, I can't really describe what it's like.

I guess I'll probably order a new Panasonic model, still multi-region, as I own a mix of area A/B discs now. I'd probably prefer to buy just a US region B player though, if I could check the power cable!
