Book Description

PACKRAFTING! is about exploring wilderness and whitewater by packraft, a lightweight, portable boat usually weighing less than five pounds. Readers will learn about packrafting gear and technique as well as the many applications for packrafting. Packrafting can be combined with mountaineering, backcountry skiing, mountain biking or trekking as part of long expeditions, or short day trips.

PACKRAFTING! features stunning photography, a beautiful full-color layout, and is printed on very high quality paper for an experientially satisfying reading experience!

About the Author
Roman Dial has been a leader of the packrafting movement for two decades, from first descents of Class V creeks to multi-week traverses of Alaska's Brooks Range to the first packrafting trek in the Grand Canyon in January 2008. Dial is a professor of Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Outdoor Studies at Alaska Pacific University, where he teaches packrafting courses.

About the Publisher
Backpacking Light promotes multi-day, self-supported ("backpackable"), backcountry travel in lightweight style. Not only does packrafting as a sport squarely fit into this core mission, but Packrafting! as a book reflects the wilderness independence of doing more with less that is at the heart and soul of Backpacking Light.

Ryan Jordan, publisher of Backpacking Light Magazine and a pioneer of packrafting in the northern Rocky Mountains, said, "There may be no better single tool for long distance wilderness travel than a packraft, and no better instructor for using it than Roman Dial. Roman has proved packrafting technique over and again. The rest of us will benefit immensely from his experience."

Jon Krakauer, author of Into the Wild, says "It was no accident that Roman was among the first people on the planet to understand that the packraft would revolutionize wilderness exploration."

Brad Meiklejohn, the Alaska Representative for The Conservation Fund said, "Roman Dial is the Pied Piper of Packrafting. If you're not careful, his infectious enthusiasm will seduce you to squander every spare moment of your life in search of the next classic day of butt-boating."

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, nice to look at, fun to read. 23 Sept. 2008

As described by the eminent outdoorsman-writer Jon Krakauer in the preface, the book's author. Roman Dial, ranks high among the elite wilderness adventurers. He is also a pioneering proponent of packrafting.

Packrafters enhance and accelerate their treks by including in their packs a lightweight inflatable one-person raft with a collapsable kayak paddle. Their little boats can transform trecherous water barriers into paddling playgrounds. Unexplored areas are suddenly readily accessible via rivers and lakes. With its small size, impressive utility, and addictive convenience, the packraft seems a hiking equivalent of an iPod.

The book has two parts:
1. The Philosophy, Equipment and Technique of Packrafting
2. Packrafting Adventures

Part 1 covers packrafting's recent genesis, its required
equipment, and how to poperly use the gear under varied water conditions. It also provides advice for planning your packrafting trip.

Part 2 contains naratives of a few of the author's own packrafting adventures---in areas from Alaska to Mexico. The author, who has published articles and photographs in magazines that include National Geographic, Smithsonian and Outdoors, writes skillfully with a pleasant cadence. Consequently, his love and knowledge of the outdoors come across loud and clear. The book also boasts several beautiful photographs.

I found it very informative, nice to look at, and fun to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 22 Jun. 2011
By Erik Halfacre - Published on
Having not yet packrafted myself, this book opened my eyes to the immense new possibilities for backcountry travel opened up by the packraft. The book is laid out almost like one long magazine article, with lots of great large photos and frequent pull quotes. This makes it a quick read, but still jam packed with good solid information as well as interesting tales of Roman's trips with the small inflatable craft. If you want to get into packrafting you need to get this book.

As an outdoor person I had heard of Roman Dial but was unsure of what packrafting entailed. Fortunately Amazon had his book in stock and I was able, with no fuss or hassle to purchase said book. An excellent purchase, a first rate and informative book. Well done Roman Dial, well done Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read. 27 Dec. 2012

There are over 50 excellent photographs in Roman's book. For anyone contemplating packrafting, this book is a must. Roman advanced the technique of packrafting from Class III rapids to Class V with a strong emphasis on safety.
