Book Description

Handsome, inarticulate Frank Newnham asks for his cousin Christian's help when he woos Rosanne Lacy by letter. Rosanne falls for Frank's delicious prose, but when they meet in person at a ducal house party, Rosanne can't understand why Frank seems so ... dull. And why is she drawn to the dark brooding Earl of Bruton, with his scarred face and air of melancholy?

This 32,000 words Regency novella was inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac - but with the happy ending readers crave. It was originally published in the anthology At The Duke's Wedding.

More About the Author

I grew up in southwest England. During my misspent youth I devoured the works of Georgette Heyer, Jean Plaidy and any other historical novels I could lay hands on. As a result I attended the University of Oxford to study history, ignoring all hints that economics might be a more practical subject. I spent several years writing catalogues of rare books and original letters and manuscripts for Sotheby's auction house in London and New York. Much of my time in this job was spent reading the personal correspondence of the famous. This confirmed my suspicion that the most interesting thing about history is people. I now live in Vermont where I enjoy skiing and writing romances set in Regency England where it hardly ever snows.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor copy of Rostand's classic 8 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The Roxanne and Cyrano character's in this tale lack the wit, depth and intellect of those in Rostand's classic tale. A happy ending does not improve the story.
This story is part of a series of stories all centered around a Duke's ill fated wedding, which is one of the reasons why a lot is hinted at but not explained, as loose ends are closed off in the related stories.
I could not warm to the scarred Christian who's looks isolate him from society far less than his cynical and superior ways around those whom he considers his intellectual inferiors, this attitude is displayed even towards women. The fact that many women then were actively encouraged to stay ignorant by men in their families and by a male dominated society seems not to have occurred to a supposedly intelligent man.
The second star is given for occasional moments of wit otherwise would award only 1 star, but apart from the rare show of wit, this tale with its borrowed plot and 2d supporting characters has little I found appealing. I recommend you read a translation of Rostand's original or if you would prefer some thing more visual, there's Derek Jacobi's portrayal, I think the play he starred in may be on DVD, or you could try watching Steve Martin's up dated version which is the movie 'Roxanne'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and a bit Heart-wrenching 26 Sept. 2014
By Reading Fanatic (CMP) - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this short story in the anthology, At the Duke's Wedding (A romance anthology). It's one of four novellas that tell the story of different romances that crop up at the house party held at the Duke's country estate to celebrate his upcoming wedding. The anthology is absolutely awesome and one that I highly recommend. This story, P.S. I LOVE YOU, is poignant and a bit heart-wrenching. The hero, Christian, Earl of Bruton, heir to a marquessate, is the dark, brooding type, complete with scarred visage. Christian gets roped into helping his beloved cousin, Frank, in his attempts to win his lady love, Miss Rosanne Lacy. For several weeks Rosanne and Frank exchange letters...letters written by Frank, but dictated by Christian. Through the letters Christian and Rosanne come to know one another, but of course she thinks Frank is the author of the letters. By the time Frank and Rosanne meet again, at the duke's house-party, Rosanne is already half in love with Frank. She is thus confused when finds herself drawn to Frank's aloof cousin, Christian.

This story is intricately written and kept me on the edge of my seat, I was that anxious to see Rosanne and Christian get their HEA --my anxiety was heightened because I really liked sweet, dimwitted Frank, and didn't want to see him hurt too badly. Christian is a hero that will touch your heart. He suffered so much as a child because of his scar and has become taciturn and aloof. He doesn't believe that he will ever find a lady who will be able to love him for himself...of course the ladies' adverse reaction to his scar only serves to confirm Christian's belief. I was so happy when Christian won Rosanne and got his HEA. He so deserved it. FYI, this is not clean romance. There is a love scene that is fairly descriptive, although not overly detailed. Happy reading!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not traditional regency! 18 April 2014

Some of the language isn't period, but I can deal with that. I prefer stories that leave something to the imagination. The sex was explicit and unnecessary. The story would be fun on it's own.

I prefer the comedy of manners outside the bedroom - as Jane Austin invented.

Cute take on the original. In many of the stories I have read that are variations on an original theme, so many are bland and unimaginative. This was different. I knew the ending but it was so much fun getting there. I look forward to reading more of her work.

A fun escape, and just the right length for a quick read. Exactly what you want from a romance, and well written.
