Synopsis

Martin Shaw stars in a masterly exploration of an isolated and beleaguered community coping with the evil and disruption of murder, based on PD James' bestselling novel. The story is set in an Anglican theological college on a desolate stretch of the British coastline. When the body of one of the students is found on the shore smothered by a covering of sand, his wealthy father demands that Scotland Yard should re-examine the verdict of accidental death. Commander Dalgliesh agreed to pay a visit and finds himself embroiled in one of the most horrific and puzzling cases of his career.

Excellent Adaptation 24 Sep 2010
By JIX
Format:DVD
These two films are excellent adaptations of P.D. James' novels. Martin shaw makes a very good Adam Dalgleish and the settings are true to the story lines. I would be happy to recommend them.

Worthy continuation 15 April 2011
Format:DVD
In spite of some negative comments ("not up to Roy Marsden standards") I bought this box of DVDs since it was and still is offered at a very low price. I have watched almost all the older productions with said Roy Marsden - and have liked them very much in their own laid-back way. The two new productions are equally enjoyable, with a different, but also convincing, impersonation of Dalgliesh and a cast of excellent actors. The settings are sumptuous and highly atmospheric. Running time is a generous 350 minutes, roughly.

Format:DVD
Martin Shaw displays his versatility as an actor in the role of Adam Dalgliesh, bringing dignity and gravitas to this double feature. As in Judge John Deed, he has the ability to grip one as the main character around which the others revolve. A more contemplative persona in this, reflective of his position as a top ranking detective, these atmospheric and absorbing dramas keep the viewer guessing what will happen next. Recommended.

Martin Shaw.... Born for the role
Outstanding DVD set. Two full length , two part stories. Martin Shaw takes up the cudgels from Roy Marsden as the eponymous Scotland Yard Commander Dalglish , and boy do you feel... Read more

Full of twists and turns!
I bought this DVD solely because it stars Martin Shaw. I was not disappointed. Each story is full of twists and turns, and is acted superbly throughout. Typical P D James.

Superb
Once again Martin Shaw delivers believable characters with great story lines. Superb entertainment, brilliant thrillers. If only he would do more.

Very watchable
Let me start by saying I enjoyed the books. So I wasn't sure whether I would also enjoy these tv dramatisations. Read more

What a disappointment
Well what can one say!!! It appeared that the actor was so inhibited with the character and tried to emulate Roy Marsden's understated performance, and failed. Read more

Very well made
These are two fine crime drama stories, but they can be a bit too ponderous at times and do feel as though stretched out a bit to fill the running time. Read more

Murder of a master detective
How could anyone ever have believed that Martin Shaw could replace somebody like Roy Marsden? The former Dalgliesh was all P.D. Read more
