5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This cd is without doubt worth it for the first track as mentioned, it is has such a satisfyingly beautiful rhythmic quality, and the same time a very dark but powerful atmosphere. The rest of the tracks become more and more interesting and minimalist, as the coagulation of male and female voices work around each other. Summa, is also a beautiful piece, with a very light and joyous tone. Part is my favourite choral composer at the moment, and listeners to this cd may like John Taveners work too, as he and Part have worked together several times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the first track alone 2 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a wonderful recording, which gives the music the space and time it needs. The first track, De Profundis, is a masterpiece, and makes the whole disc worth it on its own. There is some truly amazing singing here - from the way De Profundis builds up and then comes down again to the measured solos in And One Of The Pharisees. Rounding the whole disc off with the magnificent Magnificat makes this one of the greatest bargains you are ever likely to find

4.0 out of 5 stars Polished if Somewhat Cold 5 May 2014
By Mark
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I seem to have stumbled into becoming a collector of Part's recordings, currently focusing on choral output, though I may explore the instrumental output further down the line. I bought this album a few years ago along with the Beatus album recorded by the Estonian Phiharmonic Chamber Choir, mostly because I was looking for a good recording of the Seven Magnificat Antiphons.

This may well be a matter of personal taste, but while I don't doubt the accomplished performances , I found this album for the most part rather cold and lifeless. I think it's because the Theatre of Voices singing is too pure which made me feel that the performances were rather clinical and had no warmth.

That said, the album is well recorded, it's interesting to hear the revised version of Missa Sillabica, (The original version didn't have organ accompaniment), and the album is worth retaining for the Beattitudes and the setting from Lukes gospel recounting the story of Jesus at the house of Simon the Pharisee.

5.0 out of 5 stars A space for sound 12 May 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The more space you give to part the more music he gives back. It's hard to resist this opportunity to experience the solace and comfort of religion - even if you are an atheist.

After having discovered the music by Arvo Pärt for myself after listening to the Naxos CD 'Passio' the music on this 'De Profundis' hybryd SACD has given me another insight into his music.
The ensemble Theatre of Voices directed by Paul Miller give an indepth rendition of the individual pieces with a very clear diction, excelent timing and perfectly in tune thereby making the most of the harmonics unique to Pärt.
As an SACD the sound quality is excelent on all 3 formats: listening as a conventional CD, SACD stereo or SACD multichannel with a more spatial presentation.
