Product Description

A collection of two of Yasujiro Ozu's better known films. 'Record of a Tenement Gentleman' (1947) is set in post-war Japan and follows the story of a young boy who is abandoned by his father and who develops a relationship with a local widower called Tane, who initially resists the child, but then comes to depend on him as much as he depends on her. 'Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice' (1952) is a delicate character study about a middle-aged couple who are bored of their lives in an arranged marriage and set about livening it up, the wife almost succumbing to the temptation of an affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning. 30 Mar 2006
By A Customer
Record Of A Tenement Gentleman is a truly beautiful and incredibly moving film.
It has a similar story to Walter Salles Central Station, grumpy old woman looks after kid unwillingly. Tokyo Story is the film everyone talks about when discussing Ozu and that is without a doubt his masterpiece, but this film and Good Morning come very close in my opinion. I've seen a number of his other films and enjoyed them all but I could see how some may find them slow and difficult to watch. Give these films some time and you will be deeply rewarded.

4.0 out of 5 stars A charming, heart-warming film 22 Aug 2007
I put off watching "The Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice" for ages, because I know that Japanese films can feel slow-moving to those of us more used to the Hollywood style of film-making. This film is no exception in that it moves at a gentle pace, but I was delighted by it - it is a charming, touching and humourous study of marriage(s) within one extended family in '50s Tokyo: the little white lies and compromises that are made in order to keep a husband and a wife rubbing along together in relative harmony. It also shows how the attitudes of the younger generation towards marriage and personal freedom were changing. A rewarding film, and a pleasant change from the more masculine, martial films of Kurosawa and the like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ozu 19 Oct 2008
2 more Ozu clasics - though these titles are perhaps less well known than Tokyo Story and the 'Season's' tiltes. A shame as these are perhaps 2 better examples for an introduction to Ozu. They are far-more story driven than usual and follow, if anything, the Hollywood pattern of film-making. I love 'Flavour of Green Tea...' it's very, very funny which often bypasses many critical reviews. Anyone involved in a long-term relationship will find themselves giggling knowingly.
Anyways, if you want a good starting point for an introduction to Ozu, but felt they may be a bit too high-brow, these are a good starting point. Highly enjoyable.
