"* 'To find the drink that speaks for modern Britain': Oz Clarke"

Product Description
We're a nation of drinkers but what do we drink? Following their previous highly amusing journeys around France and California Oz and James embark on a summer road trip around their homeland, on a quest to find the drink that defines modern Britain. This is an account of their thinly disguised drinking holiday through Britain and Ireland, and what they found out about British booze en route. The pair start out in a barley field in Yorkshire, with Oz showing James what goes into beer and why. As they travel round Britain they explore the best and worst of British beers and move on to other drinks that might define modern Britain: wine and whisky, of course, and gin, vodka, cider and perry. Oz and James's hunting grounds are great British pubs, maltsters, small breweries and distilleries, sparkling wine makers, hop growers and many more, all set against the beautiful backdrop of the British countryside. This odd couple squabble and revel in their differences in an irreverent and highly amusing tribute to British drink in its many forms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright and lively - full of interesting information, 14 Feb 2009

Anyone who watched the TV series will find much of it reproduced here. Sections of dialogue are lifted from the programmes and reproduced verbatim. This isn't a bad thing, as the banter between Oz and James made for a really enjoyable programme, and it does mean that the book is consistent with the filmed version.

Snippets of drink-related trivia are threaded throughout the book- did you know that Irish whiskey was far more popular than Scotch whisky in 19th C. Britain? A fact I'm pretty sure that I've never read anywhere else. The book reminded me of a children's annual with extensive use of graphics and some arty shots at odd angles, possibly just used as filler when the interesting facts ran out.A three-quarter size Cornish pasty was one inclusion that struck me as rather odd.

For those who like fewer pictures and more in the way of good writing, Ian Marchant's The Longest Crawl in which he tours the pubs of the British Isles would be an equally valuable choice.

I purchased this book as a present for my husband because he was following the series on TV. He feels the book is a great read running alongside the TV series. Equally good whether you watched the series or not. Other informative information is inlcuded in the book. Overall a great book
