Book Description

12 Oct 1995
Fundamental to the understanding of wine is a sense of place. Knowing which country, which region and which vineyard a wine is from adds enormously to the pleasure of drinking it. This atlas shows where, why and how vines are grown and wines produced around the world, mapping the major wine countries and putting the wine areas in a regional and global context. It continues with thematic maps that highlight factors of soil, climate, economics and society that determine patterns of wine production and consumption.

From the Publisher

It was always my dream to have a book which puts you right in the vineyards – in fact the maps make you feel you are hovering over them in a helicopter. And Oz’s prose in this book is sublime.

This Wine Atlas is indespensible to anyone who has a keen interest in wine or would like to have one. I bought it for a restauranter who has a substantial wine list however it is just as suited to someone who has never studied the grapes.

This books graphics are very pleasing on the eye and the information held in it is second to none. It boasts helpful and honest observations by Oz Clarke of the various wines and what to expect from different regions. It does not just stick with the old favourites of France and Italy but has comprehensive reviews of all the regions throughout the world.

An absolute must..

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb companion for the worldly wine drinker 3 Mar 1999

Format:Hardcover
This book is both informative and beautifully presented. The descriptions of the wine growing regions, grape types and regional specialties makes looking up the bottle you have just opened a treat, and the illustrations of the hills and valleys producing the best wines in the world makes you want to travel there to taste the wine at the source. Thoroughly recommened.
3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to date 22 Mar 2005
By T. Stephenson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Great maps, great info, but not up to date with today's wine market. Many AOCs and DOCs that have started to produce great wine in the last 10 years aren't given their due. Go for the updated (2002) version.

If you are just looking for maps though, then the price on this book (esp. used copies) can't be beat...
