Book Description

Oxfordshire Murders brings together twenty-five murderous tales, some of which were little known outside the county, and others which made national headlines. Contained within the pages of this book are the stories behind some of the most heinous crimes ever committed in Oxfordshire. They include the deaths of two gamekeepers, brutally murdered in 1824 and 1835; Henrietta Walker, killed by her husband at Chipping Norton in 1887; Mary Allen, shot by Harry Rowles at Cassington in the same year; and Anne Kempson, murdered by Henry Seymour, a door-to-door salesman, in Oxford in 1931. Nicola Sly's carefully researched and enthralling text will appeal to anyone interested in the shady side of Oxfordshire's history.

More About the Author

An interest in crime and criminal behaviour led me to take a degree in Psychology, followed by a Master's Degree in Forensic and Legal Psychology. I now put my qualifications to good use by teaching adult learners who wish to gain the necessary qualifications for university entrance. (Although my 'specialist subjects' are criminology and forensic psychology, I have also taught crime and media, psychology and drug awareness courses.)

When I'm not teaching or researching and writing about murders and other gruesome occurrences I enjoy gardening and exploring the Cornish countryside with my husband and two dogs. I read voraciously and am a lifelong speedway fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder... Most Foul...! 2 Jan. 2013
By Peter
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is not my usual read, but I know the area very well and also have a barometer made by the unfortunate maker of Banbury who met his demise in the middle of the 19th century near that town. Having looked up some details on the poor man I was intrigued to find his story; his untimely end made up one of the chapters in the book. Nicola Sly has researched her subject well and includes plenty of photos of the locations mentioned in the book. It makes a good fireside read and is particularly interesting if you know the locations.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like murder stories ... 8 Mar. 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I very much enjoyed reading this book about murders done local to where I live. The author lays out the material to make it easy to understand what happened and when, and it is certainly carefully researched in those cases I know about in which my grandfather was an investigating police officer. I was disappointed that the Burford murder ("The Sausage Sandwich Murder") did not mention the crucial wireless appeal broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1931. This was one of the earliest such appeals. Well worth buying if you like this sort of thing.
