Originally appeared in 1990 and is now probably best viewed as a budget alternative to the Dictionary for Writers and Editors, which is currently available only in hardback at twice the price, but is more recently revised. As most of the rules of usage, spelling and so on have changed very little since 1990 this is still an accurate and very cost-effective purchase for the writer on a budget who needs a handy reference to correct English. Not intended specifically for the general reader, it is a writers' tool, and even writers will wish to supplement it with a good quality general dictionary for non-specialist use.
