Product Description

Book Description

A fresh new look for the 2007 edition of the Oxford Very First Dictionary is fully illustrated, with 300 entries in alphabetical order and extra vocabulary on key topics

Product Description

The Oxford Very First Dictionary introduces children aged 4+ years to the features of a dictionary in an appealing way. The dictionary has over 300 familiar words each with a simple definition and an illustration which reinforces the definition. There are also pages of topic-themed vocabulary at the back of the book, all illustrated too. Each page is clearly laid out so it is easy to pick out the main features - the alphabet down the side of the page, the letter of the page you are on in red. These are key features that young children come across as they start their non-fiction reading. A lovely extra for this age level is the illustrated opening letter - A shows a juicy apple, B shows some buzzing bees. A great introduction to the world of dictionaries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for novice readers, 13 Feb 2009

My 5-year-old granddaughter started school in August 2008 and loves this dictionary. As her vocabulary gets larger she returns regularly to the longer words. Not only does the dictionary improve her knowledge of word construction, it has also taught her how to use a dictionary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely first dictionary, ideal for new readers., 4 Sep 2009

This is a lovely book, great illustrations and nice quality of printing and binding. It's very easy to navigate and use for young children. In addition to the alphabetic sections, there are useful sections such as function words, number words, quantities etc at the back. Being a first dictionary, there are only a few words for each letter, but it's certainly a good way to get them started on using a dictionary for checking spellings etc, to support reading, and to aid learning the alphabet.
