Product Description

Developed using evidence from the Oxford English Corpus, this fully revised text offers more up-to-date and complete coverage of synonyms and antonyms than any other A-Z thesaurus. Increased coverage now includes hundreds of new phrases and idioms, and newly selected examples of real English showing how words are used, and helping to guide you to the right meaning. New features include the Word Toolkit which helps you choose the best word matches based on evidence from the Oxford English Corpus. In addition, the popular Word Link feature points you to related words. Look up 'sleep' and find the words 'sedative', 'hypnotic', and 'soporific', and find related prefixes. The redesigned centre section provides convenient lists of words by topic, from society and religion, to fashion and technology, in addition to lists of foreign, and archaic words and phrases. An invaluable resource for puzzlers, or anyone wishing to broaden their vocabulary. The Oxford Thesaurus of English is ideal for anyone who wants a comprehensive and authoritative thesaurus of current English, for use by writers and editors, students, and crossword and puzzle solvers at work or at home. The thesaurus includes 12 months' access* to Oxford's premium online dictionary and thesaurus service, Oxford Dictionaries Online, updated regularly with the latest developments to words and meanings, so you will have the most accurate picture of English available. Find out more about our living language using Oxford Dictionaries Online. Hear how words are spoken with thousands of audio pronunciations, and access over 1.9 million real English example sentences to see how words are used in context. Improve your confidence in writing with helpful grammar and punctuation guides, full thesaurus information, style and usage help, and much more. *Available in selected markets (UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, and South Africa). Essential reference 29 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
How did I ever manage without it? A well produced and organised comprehensive thesaurus. I find it hard not to get side-tracked from my intended search each time I use the volume because something else interesting always catches my eye. A great investment that will serve for years.

I've been using Collins Thesaurus of the English Language: Complete & Unabridged to support my writing (me edition was published in 1996) for years now, with my version called Collins Roget's Thesaurus. Having bought this Oxford version for my other office, I prefer the Collins approach.

Collins' Index at the back is more comprehensive and refers you to clearly numbered sections at the front, divided into Categories, where a vast range of words and idioms is offered. The Oxford, in contrast, simply has a dictionary style listing words and phrases, with all the words and a few idioms listed after each one. Cross referencing is harder, although Oxford tries to make it easier by offering Word Links which are altogether too limited. There's an odd section slap bang in the middle called a Word Toolkit, which is pretty futile.

The first word I looked up in the Oxford was "you", and it wasn't there.

In contrast, Collins refers me to 864.5 where there were a dozen alternative words and idioms along with other conjugations. Also in the dictionary of Collins, along with "you", were four idioms sending me to other sections of the Thesaurus. Overall, then, Collins offers a far more extensive selection and the Thesaurus itself is set out in a way which prompts further exploration. And at a fiver less than the Oxford (in Jan 2010) it's better value, too.

Ok.
Good book but not very extensive. I bought it for a crossword lover and he has commented about it not being as good as other thesaurus' he has had in the past.

I never thought a Thesaurus could be disappointing
I needed a new Thesaurus because my old one was falling apart, but this one, which is much heavier in weight is shockingly light in content.

An indispensable guide
An excellent thesaurus with the addition of very useful thematic lists. I find I refer to this far more than my old, much more limited paperback thesaurus. Read more
