Book Description

7 Jun 2007 0198520654 978-0198520658 New Ed
With the publication of this book psychotherapy finally arrives at the mainstream of mental health practice. This volume is an essential companion for every practising psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, psychotherapy counsellor, mental health nurse, psychotherapist, and mental health practitioner. It is integrative in spirit, with chapters written by an international panel of experts who combine theory and research with practical treatment guidelines and illustrative case examples to produce an invaluable book.

Part One gives a comprehensive account of all the major psychotherapeutic approaches. Parts Two and Three systematically describe psychotherapeutic approaches to the major psychiatric disorders and personality disorders. Many chapters are multi-authored and describe the psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and other approaches for treating these illnesses. Part Four examines applications and modifications of psychotherapy across the lifecycle. Part Five describes psychotherapy with specific populations such as medical patients and those where gender is an issue, and finally Part Six tackles some of the special topics of concern to psychotherapists including ethics, legal issues, and psychotherapy and neuroscience. The first of its kind, this is a 'must have' volume for all trainee and practising psychological therapists, whatever their background - psychiatry, psychology, social work, or nursing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aaron M. Vedock, MSW, LICSW, BCD - Psychotherapist 30 Sep 2013
By Aaron M. Vedock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a well written, and much needed text of current thought and research addressing the major modalities of psychotherapy, and specific therapeutic interventions for all of the major mental illness. The text also offers chapters on psychotherapy specific across the life cycle, and for specific populations including: medical patients, gender issues, sexual orientation, and cross-cultural concerns. Ethics and legal concerns in psychotherapy are also evaluated. I've found the text to be quite helpful in my development as a psychotherapist, and find myself referring to the text frequently. In spite of the text many accolades, I to concur with other reviews who have complained about the font-size of the text. They should include a magnifying glass when you purchase this book, (This is why I rate this book as 4 out of 5 stars). On the whole, it is a useful and relevant evaluation of current thought on issues pertinent to many psychotherapists.

3.0 out of 5 stars What the hell were they thinking??? 18 Dec 2009

The font size is a joke!? It's the smallest print letter I've ever seen! What's the point of editing an interesting and complete book, if the reader's gonna end up with a headache after 5 minutes of reading? If I had known, I'd definitely wouldn't have bought it.
