As of yet I have only read 900 pages of this work. At roughly 5000 pages, most will not read it cover-to-cover, but I like a challenge. While much can be found on the Internet, there is no substitute for something at hand that can be leafed through from one discussion to another. It is harder linking Internet discussions and references, though not impossible. What is lost in the process is being up to date. The large work is reasonably up to date given the logistics of editorial function with a majority of subjects having references 2002 and beyond. What makes this work quite good, as in prior editions (having previously read the 2 volume 3rd edition) is the readability. For whatever the reason, American medical textbooks seem to be written in a much more dense format with a less fluid and conversational style, at least in my opinion. Not all chapters are uniform in this respect, but most do not drag for the reader used to at least some Scientific writing and with a reasonable knowledge of the jargon used.
Editorial mistakes are few with only 2 noted in my readings thus far. Even these are relatively minor [1-Contributors: Dr. Bernier -Harvard Medical School affiliates are not in Baltimore, Md. and 2- in discussion of Actinomycoses, a commensal is noted as Actinomyces actinomycetescomitans, though the defunct usage is Actinobacilus actinomycetescomitans and the proper genus is now called Aggregatobacilus actinomycetescomitans.] Errors in a reference work such as this are important, so that I have specified those I have noted clearly here.
The publishers have high quality illustrations and have colored features matching those in Harrison's, Kelly's or Cecil-Loeb.
Probably the best feature for a Primary Care provider who would really purchase these is that the work has much more of a leaning towards medical presentation and treatment of Pediatric age groups than American texts with by no means a complete Pediatric discussion.
A warning: this work is not for the faint of heart or those without good muscles and perhaps backs. Each volume is probably close to 9 pounds and the three volumes are likely close to 30 pounds. If the work was much heavier, it might have to ship with a winch and chain by which to haul it or perhaps with a rolling platform for transport.
If many could consider one of the American texts even a 4-star product, this work should require a 6-star rating!
