Excellent guide 10 April 2005
By Taikin
Format:Paperback
I've nearly finished unit 12 of the 14 units. Out of the other resources I've used thus far this is the best.
At first it may seem that the course is leaving out important details (such as personal pronouns in the beginning) but this is just part of the course's careful structure, which is one of its best qualities.
The end-of-unit tests are comprehensive, the exercises are sensible but not exhaustive and the whole course is well-paced.
You'll find almost nothing on writing Japanese (except for some very light work with the kanas) but for speaking and listening it's an excellent resource.
As others have said, you can make progress with this course very quickly - before you're even halfway in.

Very good self-study course for learning to SPEAK and understand. (But no good for anyone wanting to learn to READ japanese). Standard format for each unit: Language Presentation (by listening dialogues), Pronunciation Practice, Speaking Practice.
Only one criticism - could be use a bit more variation on the "drilling" instead repeating the dialogue sentences.
I think this course takes you to a more advanced level than most courses for this price.

Most of all it has left me wanting more. There are plenty of Beginners Courses but now I need a course which will build on this.

Excellent 17 Aug 2005
Format:Paperback
I used this book for three months before coming to Japan and found it extremely user friendly and not at all dry like a lot of other similar texts aimed at beginners. I would sincerely recommend it to anyone coming over for a visit or to work.
