Review

'Stallwood continues to demonstrate that there is life after Colin Dexter with an Oxford crime series every bit as civilised as the Morse books... Stallwood's speciality is adroit plotting set in a vividly realised Oxford locale, and this is vintage stuff' (THE TIMES )

Kate, who wsa stabbed at the end of the previous novel is a much more nervous, introspective character in this thoughtful book. She has moved in with boyfriend George and has left her mother Roz, still as zany as ever, in her own home.

the mystery centres around papers found in George's attic, in the family home that has been passed down through female generations (yes, I know that George is a bloke!). Kate, under pressure from her publisher to write another trashy romance novel, decides instead to investigate the death of a 10-year old evacuee.

As ever the supporting cast are realistic, and the portrait of Oxford comfortingly real. The female vicar is a gem! I won't give the plot away, but I recommend the book as an excellent way to indulge a few hours.

When I read a detective story, I like to be able to start at the beginning and read through to the solution. I read them for escape to a cosier world which is enhanced by death and mayhem.

This was a little too heavy for me, and I wasn't very happy with the flashbacks/diaries of the evacuees and their circle. I found it perturbing and difficult to read.
