5.0 out of 5 stars Oxford Russian Grammar and Verbs. 20 May 2003
Format:Paperback
I have other Grammar books that promise things like "made easy", "made simple", and...."for beginners", but this book delivers!, it says on the cover" clear and simple explanations" and that's exactly what it does.
Grammar in any language is always a pain, but this book has thousands of examples, covering every aspect of " Nom,Acc,Gen, Dat,Ins and Prep. The work is even defined into different typeface for different examples, making it easier to search for worked examples just by spotting the typeface relative to the required subject. In short, for learning Grammar quickly and painlessly, this book is a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for quick reference 27 Dec 2006
Format:Paperback
Russian gramar is not exactly what one would call a simple task to master, therefore you're going to need a very accessible book in order to cope with all its intricacies. Granted, this book is relatively small (at least compared with Mr Wade's other publication on Russian grammar) but don't let that put you off. Every significant area of the language is explored to a reasonable depth although obviously there is little room for extensive verb tables given the 250 page limit. I believe, however, that the author's purpose lies in providing the reader with what is essential for them to use and improve their Russian and the book has certainly managed to achieve that. Definitely the best book available for students doing Russian for GCSE or A-Level and a worthwhile purchase for those studying the language at university. I'd advise serious learners to purchase another book on verbs (there are two excellent publications that are available here on Amazon) but still, Oxford Russian Grammar&Verbs is one of, if not THE, most helpful books I have come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars All grammer books should be like this 15 Feb 2005
By WilMiRe
Format:Paperback
I have studied a number of foreign languages, and this is certainly the best grammer that I have ever come across. I had a very high level of Russian many years ago, and I am trying to brush up on the language.

After experiencing a good deal of frustration while trying to go through my old grammer books, which contain an enormous amount of unnecessary and impractical commentary, I decided to give this one a try. I was at first somewhat skeptical, since I didn't think it would be possible to fully cover Russian, a very complicated language, in such an abbreviated format. But I was very pleasantly surprised to find that, not only are all of the essentials covered in a clear, concise manner, but all the exceptions to the rules (and there are quite a few in Russian) are covered as well.

This book may be somewhat disappointing to a very limited audience (e.g. students of linguistics), but it contains more than enough information for anyone who desires to speak Russian, even at a very high level, while dispensing with all of the fat that tend to bog down other grammers.

It's not surprising that this title comes from Oxford, which has also been publishing the finest English-Russian dictionary for decades. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource 30 May 2007
Format:Paperback
Russian grammar can be complicated, but this is an excellent resource for the learner who is struggling to fully get to grips with the sometimes complicated grammar. The guide explains things in a clear way, with simple examples. It doesn't assume too much and is patient. Recommended for anyone serious about learning Russian.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good accompanying material 22 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This is, as expected of the Oxford series, a comprehensive, useful and clear guide.

Recommended as an accompaniment to other learning materials, however, since it is fairly advanced from the start and requires a basic understanding to begin with, which will also be necessary to absorb most of the information. Not a teach yourself book, but a learning aid and reference book.

Worth the purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Finest perfume in small bottle" 9 July 2008
By elpl
Format:Paperback
A well-written & well-organized book. Provides answers for many question that rise up as you learn the language. The examples are really useful in order to understand plus the pronunciation is marked on the words.
This is a nice book which you can easily carry in your bag; however small it is, it contains so many things that you wonder how they do fit in there.
I would highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT FOR NEWBIES! 14 Nov 2006

Great book once you have grasped the basics of the grammar and wish to advance, I would strongly advise against this being your first Russian Book though!

Superb reference book I must say

By R. WEST-SOLEY TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book condenses a lot of information into a small space, but doesn't scrimp on detail - it covers all the major points of larger grammars such as Wade's huge Russian Grammar tome, but is compact enough to carry round in your pocket.

Each point is very clearly explained with a lot of vocabulary in the examples - very useful for boosting your base vocabulary in Russian as you revise / learn the grammar.

The verbs section is perhaps a little short, and you might want to supplement the book with another dedicated, more detailed verb book like The Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs: 555 Fully Conjugated Verbs (Big Book of Verbs Series), but as far as grammar guides go, you won't miss any of the important points by relying on this handy guide!

I think it is really going to be a great help, but I have not had much time to use it yet. However, a quick glance through tells me it is going to be a great help in my studies.
