This is an excellent phonic based reading scheme. It is much better for teaching the mechanics of reading than the general Oxford Reading Tree scheme, which relies far too heavily on a sight vocabulary. Having an initial sight vocabulary can give the impression of early success but this may break down as the number of words a child needs to read increases. Songbirds can be used in conjuction with other books without confusing or overloading the child. They are lively and interesting stories which children love.
