5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 4 May 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My son knew all his sounds and we decided to start a reading scheme. Since we had used Jolly phonics workbooks, I chose their first level (red). Although he could read them (at least the first three of each of the subjects), we found many cons: (1) The size of the words was too small. (2) Most of the stories were dry. (3) The complexity in the sounds used per book didn't build up gradually. (4) The books didn't seem to focus in a few particular sounds at a time.

Given all this, I decided to try the Songbirds series from the Oxford Reading Tree by Julia Donaldson, and they are much better. All my concerns above are fully addressed in these series. He feels a lot more confident when reading and doesn't find it -and I quote-, `boring'. He even wants to read them again and again, which is great for practice. The illustrations are very lively and we can talk a lot about them as well.

Also the teaching notes included in the Songbird series give a few good ideas to keep practising the sounds.

A great resource, worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars great set of books for learning readers 28 Mar 2011
By CJ
Format:Hardcover
Bought these for our daughter who is in reception class at school. She has really enjoyed reading them at home and has read each one a number of times.
They are a slim paperback so slide nicely into the door pocket of the car and she often reads them whilst going along in the car.
She also enjoyed the level 1 set of books and these have really held her interest and built her confidence in reading. Now she has learnt all the words in them she enjoys reading them to herself.
They are fun stories with nice pictures. She especially liked doing the animal quiz and reading the ox and the yak which was a rhyming book in places.
I have already ordered the level 3 set now she is ready for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ron Rabbit is a legend 29 Nov 2010
By cljf2
Format:Paperback
My son is reading Songbirds at pre-school- and loves them. Some of the stories are hilarious and make reading fun. Ron Rabbit is a legend, but very disappointed to see that he doesn't feature after Stage 3. Although The Snake and the Drake in Stage 4 is also fantastic!

Most parents of young children will know Julia Donaldson's work, even if they don't realise it. The Gruffalo is probably the most famous of her children's books, but there are loads of other fun and entertaining stories and poems too (The Snail and the Whale and Zogg are two of our favourites).

Julia has also written a lot of short books for new readers available from Oxford Reading Tree, of which this is one.

My 5 year old daughter found this series very helpful when learning to build up words from sounds and phonics. Her school has the entire series (I think) and she regularly brings home two or three of these for reading practice at home.

I bought Mr Zed because I lost the school's copy during a holiday. Naturally, the day after it arrived, I found the school's copy hidden in a "safe place"... :)

It's a lovely series of books but they are quite expensive if bought individually. I guess the schools can use bulk buying power to reduce the cost a bit?

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction phonics 16 Oct 2012
By Sam
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
My two year old girl loves this book (and the rest in the series, apart from Top Cat) and that helps when it comes to learning. At a cursory glance this book (the series included) looks very simple and one dimensional, not so. The interaction as you follow the story is great and the author very helpfully suggests things to engage and teach your child. If you want to read your child a great story and at the same time educate them all whilst having fun - then this is the book (and series) for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations & story line 16 Mar 2010
By K. Lee
Format:Paperback
Beautiful book, keeps child amused as keen to look at pictures and pick out details. Words are a great start to the introduction of phonics. Encourages the child to use phonics rather than recognise words on sight.
