Product Description

Writer Kate Ivory can't believe her luck when she's head-hunted by a successful Oxford publishing house. But it seems her good fortune is to be short-lived. Her new young editor, Neil Orson, falls victim to fraud and has to fight to clear his name and regain his reputation. And when the criminal responsible is found dead, Neil is the obvious suspect. It's up to Kate to find out who the real murderer is - and not just for Neil's sake! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Damp squib 26 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
The book started well and gathered pace. Details regarding identity theft and credit card fraud even had me worried about my own security arrangements. All the seemingly unconnected threads in the story began to have some relevance to each other and we were in for a cracking finale - I wish. Did the author grow tired of her story/feel unable to give it the final coup de grace/find the publishers deadline alarmingly close ? All dissolved into a bit of a feeble mish-mash type of ending - quick and convenient - why ?

'Oxford's successor to Morse' - oh please - that she certainly ain't..

I enjoyed reading this book - my first of the Oxford series - but found it light and unsubstantial - did I miss something? Compared to the likes of Tami Hoag for example it seemed superfluous, definitely not gritty or gripping, with insubstantial characterisation. It must presuppose an existing knowledge of Kate Ivory, whose character remains elusive even at the end of the book. A cheese triangle sandwich when I was hoping for vintage cheddar on crusty French bread.

Good Read 5 Oct 2009

Veronica Stallwood is a writer who should be more well known in the U.S. than she is. Her books are hard to find at bookstores or the library so I resorted to buying as many of them as I could find on a recent trip to England. While not in the top tier of writers, she writes a good read. For those who like England in general and Oxford in particular, Veronica Stallwood should be on the book list.
