Product Description

Product Description

Packed with high-resolution aerial photography of Oxford and tourist information, The Photographic Atlas of Oxford is the perfect gift for anyone who lives or works in, or visits Oxford. If you live or work in, or visit Oxford, you will already possess a personal stake in this book -- within its pages you will be able to find your house, perhaps locate your car parked in the street, visit some of your favourite places, or simply admire the stunning aerial views of the dreaming spires of Oxford University. Even if you don't know Oxford well, you will find this book fascinating. Packed, too, with tourist information about things to see and do in the city, this is the ideal visual companion to a day or a week in Oxford and the perfect visual memento of your stay. The photographic atlas is easy to use. The photography and the cartography share the same standard grid system, meaning you can cross-reference quickly between the two elements, allowing you to locate a street or place of interest quickly and accurately. Finally, all major streets have been indexed with two page numbers -- one relating to the photography and the other relating to the street mapping.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was surprised how much I enjoyed looking at this book, 12 Jan 2005
This review is from: Oxford: The Photographic Atlas (Www.Getmapping.Com) (Hardcover)
I have lived in Oxford for 3 years and know the city and it's surroundings reasonably well. I didn't buy this book for myself because I thought I would only have a quick passing interest in the aerial photos. However, I was given it for Christmas and have been fascinated by all areas, not just my own street.

It is interesting and fun just looking at areas that I know vaguely. The centre of the city, with all the colleges is at a very high resolution (1:1600 from memory), so you can see all the parts normally hidden from the public by high walls. Further out the resolution is lower (1:3200?), but still good enough to spot our house, car, even the garden hedge.

I surprised myself with how interesting I found this book, so I would recommend it to anyone who knows Oxford and is interested is in seeing it from another angle.
